In the Prime Minister’s press statement yesterday, he revealed the fantastic volunteering effort that is being assembled and mobilised to aid the NHS and support particularly vulnerable people:
“I also want to offer a special thank you to everyone who has now volunteered to help the NHS. When we launched the appeal last night we hoped to get 250,000 over a few days. I can tell you that in just 24 hours 405,000 people have responded to the call.
They will be driving medicines from pharmacies to patients.
They will be bringing patients home from hospital.
Very importantly they’ll be making regular phone calls to check on and support people who are staying on their own at home.
And they will be absolutely crucial in the fight against this virus.
That is already – in one day – as many volunteers as the population of Coventry.”
Many people in the local area have already responded to that call for volunteers and we anticipate that the new NHS Volunteers Responders force and those mobilised through it and in conjunction with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council backed community support hub and its Contact Centre, will start making a real difference in the area very soon.
Locally, Councillor John Dennis has informed us about the East Riding Council’s response:
“The contact centre which residents are to call will have a dedicated number (01482) 393919 and will be open from 9.00am until 9.00pm Monday to Friday and from 9.00am until 6.00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. An email address is also available for those who wish to contact us electronically – firstname.lastname@example.org .
The aim of this service is not to take away from the great work and community spirit that has been established over the last few weeks across the East Riding but to provide extra help and support for those residents who really need support with their daily living and who don’t have carers, family, friends, neighbours or local community groups available to help.
They will be able to call a dedicated telephone number to request support which could include asking for prescriptions or essential food items to be picked up or just a simple telephone call.
I must also stress that this contact centre is not for emergencies or for those vulnerable residents who are in our Adult Care system. The people we want to help through this service are those who may be in self-isolation and need medicines or essential food-collecting, pets that need walking or are maybe feeling lonely and would like to be able to chat with someone.
The formal launch of the new service will take place on Thursday 26 March in the media and via social media channels. The Council is also planning to send a letter to every household in the East Riding detailing just how we are tackling this pandemic, what people can do to make sure they stay safe as well as the details for the contact centre.
