“Hands and Paws Off Hedon!”

“Keep your Paws Off Hedon and the East Riding” message to Hull City Council from furry campaigner!

Councillors Hands Off CAMPAIGNERS wanting to see off attempts by Hull City Council to expand its boundaries into the East Riding took to the Hedon Market Place on Saturday to convince residents to vote “No” in the Boundary Referendum which gets underway in just 7 days time (Monday 8th September 2014).

The Street Surgery organised by Hedon Mayor Councillor John Dennis revealed once again the overwhelming support that campaigners seem to have amongst the local population with no apparent sympathy for the concept of being part of a Greater Hull.

Yvonne Becks, a local resident from Inmans passed the stall and volunteered to leaflet her street with the campaign flyers. Asked whether local people were just being snobs for not wanting to be part of Hull, she retorted: “We’re not snobs! But if we had wanted to be in Hull we’d have gone there to live!”

Another passer-by who stopped to show support was Cheryl Gautier and her dog Gale – and a new campaign slogan was coined “Keep your Paws off Hedon and the East Riding!”

The mainstay of the campaigners were Hedon Town Councillors which included Hedon’s UKIP Town Councillor Terry West. However, Cllr West was keen to emphasise that he was there to raise awareness of the Boundary Referendum only: “People need to know that the Referendum is on; but important to me is that we ask people to use their vote, not tell them ‘how’ to vote!”

The Hands Off campaign leaflets are already starting to be delivered across Hedon and Cllr Dennis urged residents to display them in their windows and cars to show their support for the campaign.
