Hedon to Paull walk is designated part of the King Charles III Coast Path Route

This is an update of a post published during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of a series to publicise some of our local walking routes. Since then, the majority of this walk has been designated as part of the King Charles III Coast Path route. This post aims to guide those following the path.

This direct Hedon to Paull walk starts from the Hungry Horse (The Kingstown) in Preston South and ends in the village of Paull. It takes about an hour and offers views of the industrial landscape of the Saltend Chemicals Park and scenic views of the Humber estuary. The section of the walk alongside the chemicals park is expected to be redirected as the adjacent land is developed, so take these views in while you can.

Once in Paull, you can stop for a meal and refreshments in one of the wonderful pubs, or coffee and cake in the church cafe on a Sunday (from May through the summer), or you have the option of a Paull walk or catch the bus back to Hedon. You could opt to walk back to Hedon along the same route or take the roadway walk back. Now, as part of the King Charles III Coast Path route, you can carry on the route along Paull Holme Strays, Cherry Cob Sands, Stoney Creek, and all the way to Easington.

It can be muddy and slippery in areas after prolonged rainfall. Take particular care when climbing down/up under the bridge.

  • Note the route logo on lamp posts. From the Hungry Horse https://w3w.co/universally.darker.shorts, continue along the left side of the road until after the Preston South sign, then cross the road at the Sainsbury’s supermarket.

  • Follow the footpath passing the Hedon town sign. After the Hedon sign, cross the waterway (locals call it the Westlands drain) and cut through https://w3w.co/gasp.motion.shade to the right following the grass footway. Hedon cut next right after you pass over the drain

  • Keep the garages and buildings on your left and follow the grass footway until the end of the drain. Here, turn right and note the yellow route markers on the fences https://w3w.co/behave.steer.reach. Follow the route around up until the gated bridge, but don’t go through it.

  • Walk over the pipe directly to your right https://w3w.co/change.jams.fever via the wooden steps and down to the drain side and under the bridge (it’s the Hedon bypass road above you). As you turn the corner, you get your first views of the Saltend Chemicals Park.

  • Walk along the drain side to the next road (Paull Road) https://w3w.co/sentences.yours.sums. Cross the road and the river and continue along the footpath. You have the drain and the Saltend Chemical works on your right. You will notice some redundant boats and moorings along the drain. About midway along this path on an island in the middle of the drain is an abandoned wooden shrimping boat https://w3w.co/enhancement.axed.rank. It’s been there for years and deteriorates a bit more each year.

Continue to where the drain meets the River Humber. You can see the Salt End jetty. And the view can be very different depending on high and low tide. This is a good spot https://w3w.co/branch.paint.hugs for photographs at sunset.

    Continue into Paull.
