JAMES BARON from Leaf Sail in Hedon is running in the Virgin sponsored London Marathon on Sunday 13th April 2014 to raise money for the charity Children with Cancer UK.

James Baron – training run

James is no stranger to charity events, he helps organise charity football Fun Day events held at Eastside every year, and tries to do something physical for charity each year too – but this year, he says, the Marathon is a big step up from the 10k runs and shorter distances he is used to!

The London Marathon is a gruelling 26 miles 385 yards long and despite James having trained for 5 months on the streets around the East Riding (an estimated 500 miles worth of training runs), he fears the last 10 miles will be the hardest!

“From training runs I have done anything over 18 miles starts to hurt and it becomes less about how fit you are but how mentally strong you are.”

James has been motivated to tackle the famous course because of the benefits it will bring to his chosen charity.

“The Children with Cancer charity was born out of unimaginable circumstances for one family in the late 1980’s but continues to this day to raise money for children with cancer and those families and loved ones affected.

“My inspiration is that everybody knows somebody who has been directly effected by cancer. My family and circle of friends is no different. The hard training is worth it knowing you are potentially helping to fight this horrible disease.

“Any pledge of money to help me along the 26 miles would be greatly received”

James has set up a Virgin Money Giving Fundraising Page at the link below – and we are sure that Hedon Blog readers will want to show their support.

  1. A very big thank you for all the kind words and encouragement I have recieved in the run up to Sunday. It was without a doubt the hardest thing I have done. The heat and course was tough but I completed it in 4hr37mins. Despite the torture I put my body through it was a fantastic experience and one I am keen to experience again. Alongside the excellent crowds, experience and support I have also raised, up to now £1415 for Children with Cancer uk. My donation page is still up and running and will be for another 6 weeks.
I have completed my first run this evening after the marathon so onwards I go to Hull 10k, Humber Bridge 10k, Humber Bridge half marathon and of course the Saltend Charity fun day.
I also made it to Wembley (a very painful journey) so there’s another trip to london for the FA cup final to fit in.

  2. Good Luck Jim, going on site to sponsor you, will double up if the Tigers do the business

  3. I wish you all the best on the marathon and I hope you get all the support you deserve for the charity.
People like you make the world a better place, thank you!

  4. What we must admire James for, is his dedication! Not only to the Children with Cancer charity – but also to Hull City! James has pledged to go and watch City play in the semi-final of the FA Cup at Wembley AFTER he’s completed the Marathon! Respect!
