Is your Hedon tourism business Remarkable?

Here at the Hedon Blog we see no reason why local tourism businesses in our part of Holderness shouldn’t put themselves forward for these Remarkable Awards…..

REYTA Awards 2014
Heads Up! Holderness businesses

FORMER WINNERS of the region’s premier tourism awards have urged others to enter this year’s competition. And here at the Hedon Blog we see no reason why local tourism businesses in our part of Holderness shouldn’t put themselves forward!

The Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards (REYTAs), organised by Visit Hull and East Yorkshire (VHEY) celebrate the stars of the region’s growing industry, which is now worth in excess of £615 million a year.

A range of businesses, from restaurants to pubs, to hotels and self-catering providers, tourism operators and attractions, are being urged to enter the 2014 competition before the deadline of Monday 20th January 2014.

People can enter themselves and others in 12 categories for the chance to win a REYTA at the finals being held at the Spa in Bridlington on Thursday 13th March. And for the winners there’s the opportunity to progress to the national Visit England tourism awards.

Guest of honour at this year’s prestigious gala dinner will be James Beresford, chief executive of Visit England.

The awards are free to enter and the process has been made even simpler this year. “Individuals and businesses can just enter themselves by visiting our website – they don’t have to wait to be nominated,” said REYTAs organiser Paul Vinsen.

“There really is nothing to lose and everything to gain – just being shortlisted, let alone winning, will put the spotlight firmly on their businesses.

“All those shortlisted will be featured at our awards dinner, with individual videos spotlighting what they have to offer being shown to the 400-plus people attending,” he said.

Justin Staal, of Staal Smokehouse at Long Riston, was a newcomer to the awards in 2013 and a first-time winner in the Remarkable Fayre category. Having established their business producing high quality smoked salmon, gravadlax, trout, mackerel, haddock, chicken and duck in November 2011, he says winning a REYTA has helped cement a reputation that has seen them supplying products to some of the best restaurant and outlets in the region.

And Richard Wastling, manager of Burton Constable Holiday Park and Arboretum, winners of the best caravan and holiday park award in 2013, said they also valued the accolade. “It really does mean so much and we will definitely be in for it again this time. It raises our profile and has helped put on us on the map locally, regionally and nationally.”

Winning a REYTA allows that business to include the Awards Logo on all the promotional material it publishes. It is viewed as a star rating system by the winners, and as something that recognises the quality of service and facilities on offer.

The 2014 REYTA categories are:

  • Remarkable Hotel Accommodation
  • Remarkable Bed and Breakfast
  • Remarkable Self Catering Provider
  • Remarkable Fayre
  • Remarkable Cuppa
  • Remarkable Restaurant of the Year
  • Remarkable Pub
  • Remarkable Business Tourism Award
  • Remarkable Visitor Attraction
  • Remarkable Tourism Experience/Event
  • Remarkable Caravan Holiday Park/Holiday Village of the Year
  • Remarkable Sustainable Award

In addition, the VHEY board will present an additional REYTA to the individual who, in their view, has made the greatest contribution to tourism in our region in the past year.

Entry is free and application forms can be completed online. The deadline for entries is Monday 20th January 2014.

Entries will be shortlisted and invited to the final on Thursday 13th March 2014, where the winners – selected by a panel of independent experts – will be announced.
