Mavis and Derek Rosindale in garden

GREEN-FINGERED couple Derek and Mavis Rosindale are the winners of the Hedon in Bloom Competition 2013.  Their beautiful garden on Magdalen Lane has already been recognised as outstanding and in June this year they opened their garden up as part of the National Garden Festival and 92 people from all over the region visited and several hundred pounds was raised for charity.

The Hedon Blogger visited Derek and Mavis on Sunday morning and discovered a couple who are passionate about their garden and gardening. It’s a hobby that they’ve only really taken up in the last four years, they say, but in actual fact they have worked on their little patch of secluded heaven far longer than that. And it shows: It’s a garden of new discoveries around every ‘corner’; from the topiary sculptured hedging of the front garden, the back-garden with its enticing views that draw you in, to the surprise garden, orchard, wildlife and working area at the rear.

The garden has been designed with wildlife in mind, and the flowers were literally buzzing with bees. Nesting boxes were evident in the trees and a few years ago they had Kestrels nesting. Derek told me how they created their own ‘hide’ from wooden pallets, draped with a green table-cloth with a slit cut for a camera so they could get some unique photographs of the fledgling birds. It’s this care and attention to detail that is the hallmark of the Rosindale’s garden.

Derek and Mavis are very enthusiastic about their gardening and it is quite infectious – I went home with my head buzzing with terms such as ‘bux’, ‘cosmos’ and ‘leylandi’ and with an urge to find out more.

Well done the Rosindales – worthy winners of Hedon in Bloom!
