College car park problem – and solution offered!

A letter from a concerned driver:

Dear Hedon Blog,

I‘m a regular user of the South Holderness Technology College car park, both mornings and afternoons. At times (especially Fridays) it can be totally horrendous getting in and out of the car park and I feel that it is an accident waiting to happen.

I have found an aerial photo of the school and studied the parking area and have come up with what I think would be a good solution to this problem without much outlay to the school funds.

I personally think it would be a 100% improvement to make it one way. If there is the worry of speeding, sleeping policemen could be added at strategic points.

Car park - showing reader's proposed improvements

I would love to read the comments that other readers of the Blog might have on this as I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I have wrote to certain people about my concerns but haven’t seen any improvement so my letter was probably disregarded.

Sincerely,

A concerned driver.

Waste incinerator: “Brilliant victory for passionate people” says local MP, but we need to improve recycling!

MP GRAHAM STUART, who helped found HOTI (Hull and Holderness Opposing the Incinerator,) has joined in the celebrations following the announcement that the Waste Incinerator would not now be built.

However, in hailing the news as a “Brilliant victory for passionate people working together” the MP also warned campaigners not to rest on their laurels now the incinerator plan was scrapped. It was important that residents turned their attention to improving recycling rates.

The MP in a press release issued today said “Recycling rates have been improving over the past few years and that is great, but we must all keep going and try and make sure we reduce the need for projects like this incinerator.”

Graham Stuart has worked hard as part of the HOTI campaign himself but has also recognised the role played by other campaigners.

“Congratulations must go to all those who have also fought so hard… Credit must go to Cllr Peter Turner, John Dennis, Malcolm Lynn and Mike Bryan along with everyone in the community who attended meetings and marched with me in protest at the incinerator plan.”

“I started the HOTI campaign in 2006 and it has been a brilliant example of cross party working with no artificial political divides – everyone was working towards the same goal and today that goal has been achieved.”

“The termination of the contract with Waste Recycling Group (WRG) means the people of Hedon, and the surrounding communities, can quite literally breathe a sigh of fresh air in relief.”

Martial Arts School to breathe new life into Village Hall

PRESTON SOUTH VILLAGE HALL in Princes Avenue is to be the base for a new Martial Arts School.

The Village Hall, which has been disused for some time, will be leased to an organisation that intends to run martial arts classes for children and adults.

The Village Hall Committee agreed to this action in the hope that this would revitalise the run-down building.  The lease has been granted for 12 months and the leaseholder has agreed to pay for refurbishments and improvements at the Hall.

The Hedon Blog hopes to bring news of the Martial Arts Classes when these are published.

New Waste Incinerator contract for Saltend? – “More chance of Hell freezing over…!”

THE LEADER of Hull City Council has spoken about the decision not to press ahead with plans for a Waste Incinerator at Saltend.

In his personal blog Councillor Carl Minns declared:

“…should the Lib Dems retain the leadership of the Council in May there is more chance of Hell freezing over than us negotiating a new contract for an incinerator.”

His blog also quotes the official statement released by the joint councils and Waste Recycling Group:

“Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Waste Recycling Group Ltd (WRG) have mutually agreed a managed termination of their joint waste management contract. The current services will be provided until the end of March 2013 to enable residents to continue to improve on their excellent recycling and composting achievements. An energy-from-waste facility will not be built within this contract. The Councils will put in place new contractual arrangements for the treatment and disposal of waste.”

People power praised as ecstatic campaigners celebrate defeat of Waste Incinerator

"People power!" HOTI March 3rd October 2009

ANTI-INCINERATOR CAMPAIGNERS, HOTI (Hull and Holderness Opposing the Incinerator) heard today (Tuesday 18th Jan 2010) that a press release has been issued jointly by the Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council that the JWA (Joint Waste Authority) contract with Waste Recycling Group (WRG) will effectively be terminated in 2013 and that the 240,000 tonne Mass Burn Waste Incinerator, proposed for Saltend will not be built under that contract.

WRG currently provide bin collection and household waste recycling services for both councils and their contract will end in 2013 in effect scrapping the company and council plans to build a waste incinerator.

Spokesman for HOTI John Dennis, who is a Hedon Town Councillor and businessman in the town gave his comments which are reproduced in full below:

“Of course HOTI is more than pleased with this news, we are ecstatic !! Our battle with the JWA has been waging for over 5 years, since they announced their decision to construct this massive incinerator on the eastern edge of the city, within sight and smell of Hedon, Preston, Paull and Thorngumbald. Our campaign has had fantastic local support and members of HOTI know they would not have succeeded without the backing of the local ratepayers so we are delighted for the residents too.

We have been a constant thorn in the side of the JWA and WRG as we said we would be right at the outset. Their decision is in no small part due to the efforts of the HOTI campaign group which has placed objections to the proposal at every level from the initial local Planning Committees, right up to HM Treasury and even the European Union.

The original proposal was that the incinerator would be built, commissioned and fully operational by 2010, but so far due to the delays we have caused, not a single brick has been laid. HOTI has known for 2 years or more that the whole project was in dire trouble, but no-one at the JWA would admit it. The issue of their press release is tantamount to admitting it now, and no doubt the champagne corks will be popping in the homes of ratepayers of South West Holderness.

Isn’t this an excellent example of what can be achieved by ‘People Power’?”

This news was also reported by the Hull Daily Mail and by the BBC.

The BBC article suggested that the plans to build an incinerator were only “in doubt” by the ending of the contract with WRG in 2013.  It quoted a joint councils spokesperson who said: “…new arrangements would be put in place for the treatment and disposal of waste when the contract came to an end.”

While we have probably not heard the last of plans for a waste incinerator – this does seem a real cause for local celebration! Congratulations to HOTI and the thousands who have marched and otherwise actively opposed the incinerator!

Phantom Encounters at Fort Paull

THE FORMER GUN BATTERY and Napoleonic Fort at Paull is the venue for a fun Ghost Hunt in February 2011.

Fort Paull would seem a perfect venue for a Ghost Hunt. Having being built in 1542 the site has a rich military history and – according to organisers Phantom Encounters – its fair share of resident spirits. On previous Ghost Hunts at Fort Paull people have apparently experienced various paranormal phenomena, with shadowy figures moving in the underground areas, sudden temperature drops and ‘cold spots’, and doors and museum exhibits moving of their own accord!

For more information visit the Phantom Encounters website. Event at the Fort commences at 9pm on Saturday 26th February and ends at 3am on the Sunday morning. The cost is £35 per person.

Fort Paull is well worth a visit during normal opening hours. Opening for normal business again on 1st March 2011, Fort Paull is now a popular attraction for all the family with the world’s only surviving Blackburn Beverley Aircraft and lots of amenities including tea rooms made up from a train carriage once used by Elvis Presley who travelled on it during his time in the military.

…I wonder if the spirit of Elvis lives on at the Fort? Ooo… I’m all shook up!
