I’m really enjoying the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics! And who wouldn’t like a ringside or grandstand seat at some of the fantastic seasonal sports on offer at this spectacular event? But alas, most of us, millions of viewers, have to make do with watching it on TV.

The TV coverage of the games has been impressive. The use of automated dolly cameras, body cams, remote-controlled and drone videography has transformed our enjoyment of the games. Point-of-view photography has created an immersive experience, enabling an unprecedented live view and the opportunity to revisit the action in super slow motion. Just wonderful!

As a photographer, I just want to be in on that action. But without actually being there, and in a prime spot, what do you do? I could record the action and look back at the stills. But where is the creative fun in that!?

This is where Television, Intentional Camera Movement photography comes in! Sitting comfortably and warm in front of your TV, grab your camera and set a slow shutter speed that will inevitably lead to camera shake. This is normally undesirable, but for the purposes of creative and abstract photography, it is an intentional act. Then let the drama of the speeding sport unfold. Close-up shots on the TV are best, then fire the shutter. And what you achieve is a dramatic blur of action. It’s not a copy of what happened, but your own impression of that moment! It’s also great fun! At least until the point that you annoy the others in the room trying to watch!
