Hedon dragon – he’s called Daniel!

I’ve shot many photos of the Hedon dragon at Saint Augustine’s Church over the years, but only recently became aware of him being called Daniel.

A Hedon fairy tale – Two Imps and a Little Dragon, written by resident Norman Newlove in 1984, prompted the dragon to be named Daniel! According to the tale Daniel was frozen in time as he attempted to scare two troublesome imps that were causing mischief to residents. As recently as September 2023 school children from Inmans Primary School visited the church to see Daniel; they were given special permission from teachers to pull scary faces at the imps to complete the dragon’s task.
