Questions submitted to the Question Time, include…
Those booking and/or submitting questions for Question Time were asked to list their top three concerns in this general election. The top four issues, prompting our choice of questions to ask candidates, were:
- NHS/Social Care
- Education
- Immigration
- Environment Climate Change
Whilst most people who have booked to come to the event have listed health, social care or the NHS as one of their top three issues, there is only one specific question submitted to candidates on that subject; “Will you admit that the NHS is broken…?”.
Other questions ask about tackling the climate crisis and achieving energy-efficient homes. Obtaining adequate funding for children with special educational needs and disabilities and tackling crumbling infrastructure in school buildings concerns other questioners. Immigration is a concern of many of those listing their top three election issues. A question on the Government’s Rwanda scheme was submitted.
Specifically, local issues have not been the subject of many questions, with one exception being telegraph poles installed against community opinion.
- Apologies from Chris Collin who had a prior commitment.
- Apologies from Denis Healy who could not attend. He was represented by Linda Johnson the Liberal Democratic candidate for Hull West and Haltemprice.
“Question Time” Election Hustings:
Question Time took place on Monday 17 June 2024. See the reports in the Holderness Gazette on June 20 and June 27.

Issues likely to dominate the local General Election debate:
As well as the national issues e.g. the economy, the cost of living crisis, wars in Gaza and Ukraine, immigration, health service, education etc, several local issues will be – and need to be – part of the local debate. These include:
Unnecessary telegraph poles. This issue needs resolution. Candidates will need to state their position on the following:
- Repeal of the permitted development legislation that empowers network builders to ignore local community opinion and to overbuild infrastructure.
- Pledge to seek the removal of telegraph poles and networks installed against community opinion.
- Support for the ongoing boycott of internet service providers using unnecessary telegraph poles.
Hedon and Preston bypass. The ongoing and potentially massive industrial developments in South West Holderness require a radical solution to the existing traffic problems that will be made worse.
What other local issues do you feel should be debated by candidates during the General Election campaign?
