CONGRATULATIONS to Hedon Town Council and its staff for putting on a successful Hedon Christmas Lights Night. Helped by the mild weather, the event was a great warm-up for the festive season for the hundreds of people taking part.
From the amazing glowing stiltwalkers, and the other costumed characters, to the great stalls and open shops, fairground rides, and other attractions and entertainment, there was something for all family members to enjoy. It was a return to the great events of the past, particularly welcome after the stresses of recent times. Lots of voluntary groups took part in helping to make the night enjoyable and lots of good causes benefitted too.
SOUTH HOLDERNESS SWIMMING Club is conducting a fundraising drive to quite literally give young swimmers the best possible start in their sport. The club is attempting to raise over £8,000 to purchase five Olympic standard diving blocks for use at the poolside. Swimmers stand on the blocks and upon the beep starting the race will dive into the water to achieve the speediest swim.
The club’s current blocks are 20 years old and not the ones standardly used in competitive swimming. A Crowdfunder appeal has been launched by the club to enable it to get new ones. Carol Hunter-Robinson, Club Chair and Development Coach explains on the webpage: “In that daunting moment of standing on a diving block waiting for the starting beep, the last thing you want to be worrying about is where to place your feet. This is the reality for our swimmers who have to train using a ‘flat’ deck level diving block, rather than the raised back adjustable diving blocks used at galas. Our swimmers are fully committed and dedicated to their sport but will always be at a disadvantage if they are unable to perfect their dive starts. New blocks will really make a difference.”
The club was busy at Hedon’s Christmas Lights night on Friday with its donated bottle tombola raising funds with Club Chair Carol dressing up as The Grinch to round to drum up support! The Crowdfunder page is at: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/olympic-dive-block-fundraising-appeal-shsc
South Holderness Swimming Club trains at the East Riding Leisure swimming pool in Preston. The club accepts new members (from age 6). The club offers a free two-week trial for prospective members. Contact Carol at email cjxcx@msn.com or through the Club’s Facebook page for more details.

From South Holderness Swimming Club:
“We are pleased to update you all that we had our dive blocks delivered this weekend. Our swimmers were thrilled to be using them for the first time at one of our club competitions.
“See the picture of the new blocks with some of our swimmers. The deep end was buzzing and they couldn’t wait to practice on them.
“Thank you all so much for donating, we really didn’t think raising so much money in such a short space of time was possible bit you did it for us. We can’t put into words how thrilled we all are.”
