ARMY CADETS from the Humberside and South Yorkshire Force exercised their rights to march through the ancient borough of Hedon with flags flying and drums playing. One of those cadets was Thomas Richmond who had the honour of playing the Hedon drum which is always a featured instrument when the cadets come to town.
The assembled Cadets were inspected by the Mayor of Hedon Councillor Jim Lindop and commanding officer Colonel Nigel Wilkinson. The Mayor also inspected the Freedom Scroll which is the charter that grants the rights of the Freedom of Hedon to the Army Cadet Force. Colonel Wilkinson later explained that the Scroll has been altered three times since 1960 to reflect changes to the name of the Force.
Following the formal inspection, the first part of the march took place around Hedon’s main roads leading to St Augustine’s Church where a special service was held with scripture readings by Cadets and Colonel Wilkinson and an address by Padre Edith Dawson. During the Service the Army Cadet Force banners and Freedom Scroll were formally presented.
The second part of the march involved the formal salute from the cadets to their Commanding Officer.
Colonel Wilkinson said after the event: “It was indeed an honour to accept the Freedom of Hedon. This is my second visit to the town having only taken over as Commanding Officer in November. We’re delighted to be here. It’s been a great day.”
All those present as parents and spectators will have been delighted with the event which is probably not going to take place in the town again until 2015. Congratulations are offered to all those cadets who took part.
