A PETITION which opposes the expansion of Hull at the expense of Hedon’s open spaces, will be handed in to planning officers at County Hall, Beverley today.
Those signing the “Urban Sprawl” petition have expressed their concern that commercial developments to the west and south-west of Hedon might get uncomfortably close to the boundaries of the town. Such developments, say the petitioners, would impact on local waterways and would seriously increase flood risks across the whole of South Holderness.
East Riding Councillors Mike Bryan and John Dennis have been delighted by the response which saw nearly 550 people signing the petition in just two weeks. It will now add to the responses of local Ward Councillors and those of Town and Parish Councils to the East Riding Council’s Draft Local Plan.
“This is a very encouraging number,” said Councillor Dennis “Mike Bryan and I only had two weeks to sort it out. It’s considerably more than voted in the Hedon Town Council Election, and reaffirms what so many residents have been telling us, namely, we are firmly against any development proposals which would result in the loss of identity of our communities, or add to the risk of flooding in this area.”
“We would like to express our appreciation for the help provided by a number of volunteers, and the local town and parish clerks who held the petition pages in their offices. A prize of a box of Choccy Biscuits goes to Thorngumbald Parish Council Office where they persuaded almost 250 people to sign up.”
Eighty seven people signed the online version of the petition with 53 of those requesting that the Councillors keep them informed on matters relating to the Local Plan.
The completed Local Plan for the East Riding is expected to be published in the Autumn of 2013. In early 2014 it will be submitted for independent examination with its final adoption expected to be towards the end of 2014.
For such a short period of time I think congratulations are in order for collecting so many names on the petition regarding the old aerodrome being included in Hull’s future plans, as I believe it important that local people have some input.
With regard to the new development by ABP (Jersey) PLC I believe it’s been named as “Green Port Hull” whereas it’s being built at Saltend near the old ship building port of Paull. These two being part of the East Riding and not Hull:-

The sole place name of “Hull” may well be advantageous to the company but as any businessman or property owner will know, there can be legal complications down the line when claiming rights and it may be prudent to think about any future consequences.
