FOLLOWING A REPORT in the Hull Mail (Sat 23rd Feb) with the headline “No plans for incinerator in new waste contracts” we were contacted by Mr Jim Uney who hoped in his letter that he “was not being premature” in welcoming the good news?
Upon further investigation we were concerned that it still might be possible for a potential contractor to include incineration in a proposal to win one of the £250m worth of waste contracts available from the East Riding Council procurement process?
We asked local HOTI spokesman (Hull and Holderness Oppose The Incinerator) and East Riding Councillor John Dennis for his comments on the matter.
Although Councillor Dennis says that the situation will not really be clear until after July 2013 when the contracts are awarded, he has discussed with the East Riding Council’ portfolio holder for environmental affairs, Councillor Symon Fraser: “I asked him whether any of the 15 companies have suggested incineration, he said a small number have, but they may well already operate existing plants elsewhere, which are running below capacity.”
So perhaps in response to Mr Uney we would suggest that although things seem to be heading in the right direction, we hold off on cracking open that bottle of celebration bubbly just yet!
