THE ANNUAL MEETING of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, took place on May 13th 2010 and Councillor David Rudd was elected to be its new Chairman and will serve until May 2011.

Cllr David Rudd

Councillor Rudd, lives in Market Weighton, and is a councillor for the Wolds Weighton ward.   He was first elected as a member of East Yorkshire Borough Council and Market Weighton Town Council in 1985 and also served from 1987 on the former Humberside County Council before becoming a member of East Riding of Yorkshire Council in 1996.  For the past two years, Councillor Rudd has served as vice chairman of Humberside Police Authority.

However, the Hull Daily Mail in an interview with Councillor Rudd cites his upbringing in Hedon as an early influence in his political career when he used to attend the town’s annual mayor-making ceremony and take part in the traditional Penny Throwing that accompanied it.

This just goes to prove that while some of the town’s traditions do seem a little quirky to outsiders, in actual fact they do add to the well-being and quality of life of those living here. They are even a source of inspiration to some!

Catch the traditional Penny Throwing ceremony this Thursday 20th May 2010.
