Have a Twitter about Hedon for Christmas… and let’s Tweet-up in the New Year!

GET YOURSELF TWITTER FOR CHRISTMAS…

TWITTER IS A REAL-TIME information network that connects you to the latest information about what you find interesting. Simply find the public streams you find most compelling and follow the conversations.

At the heart of Twitter are small text-like messages of information called Tweets. Each Tweet is 140 characters in length, but you can share a lot with a little space and link to other websites and sources of further information.

Some people never tweet, they simply use Twitter as a way to get the latest information on the things that interest them. Whilst Facebook is all about connecting and chatting, Twitter is more about collecting and sharing information. …Of course some people use it to follow their favourite pop-stars and celebrities. Hmph!

Connected to each 140-character Tweet is a details section that provides additional information. You can tell your story within your Tweet, or you can think of a Tweet as the headline, and use the details pane to tell the rest with photos, videos and other media content. See Twitter in action on YouTube.

For those of you who are serious about searching and organising with Twitter, then you can download third-party applications like TweetDeck to help you do just that!

AND LET’S MEET-UP…

In the New Year… Let’s have a local meet-up of all those connected to the Hedon Blog via its  Twitter Account @HedonBlog (and Facebook Page) – a Tweet-up (and a Face-up)!

This can be a social event, but also a chance to bring your own Hedon news and views for inclusion in the town’s own 21st century news channel! And a chance to meet others who want to help out with the Blog reporting and information service.

Watch this space…

PS: Thank you to Glenn Stallard who sent in this cool Hedon Blog logo! Only just retrieved it after it got caught up in the Blog e-mail system.

Events up until Christmas Day 2010

IT’S CHRISTMAS! And already there are opportunities to celebrate!

The Station hosts a Christmas Carols – with a difference on Wednesday 22nd December, while Christmas Karaoke is on offer at the King’s Head on Christmas Eve.

Meanwhile, a traditional Christmas Carol Service will take place on Christmas Eve at the Alexandra Hall.

Big Freeze – be a Big Neighbour!

AS TEMPERATURES PLUMMET once again, residents are asked to keep an eye out for those neighbours who might otherwise suffer from the affects of severe weather.

AGE UK has estimated that more than 30,000 older people die from preventable causes over the winter months. Many thousands more suffer needlessly. The last bout of severe weather in Hedon led to many elderly people feeling trapped in their own homes.

In these circumstances a simple act of good neighbourliness – clearing a path, fetching essential shopping, just letting someone know you are available in case of emergencies – can have a real impact in helping people feel safer and prevent problems developing.

In the Big Freeze – be a Big Neighbour. Spread the warmth!

Facelift of 800 year old Hedon Church

THE FACELIFT at St Augustine’s Church – the “King of Holderness” – has been completed according to an announcement by William Anelay Ltd, the experts responsible for the work at the grade 1 listed building.

Repairs to the Church’s structural masonry and replacement of carved masonry pieces has taken place, including one of the Gargoyles which was specially recreated by York based William Anelay.

The work, which began back in August 2010 at an estimated cost of £100,000, is testimony to all those that have raised funds or given funds towards the Church’s restoration over the last few years.

The picture was taken back in November 2010 before the work was completed.

Concern over British Legion Club

THE HULL DAILY MAIL has reported fears that the Hedon Royal British Legion Club faces closure?

According to the Mail the Club has faced annual losses for the past ten years and is now struggling to stay open. The Club trustees have opted to carry out a recruitment campaign to attract new members – particularly younger members – as their preferred strategy to save the Magdalen Gate venue.

The Hedon Blog wishes the Club every success in this campaign to preserve social and entertainment facilities in the town!

Individual Club Members have occasionally sent notices of upcoming events for publication on the Hedon Blog. However, if the Club wishes to use these humble pages to reach other local residents about their events, activities and offers – then the Blog would be delighted to help on a more regular basis.

Please complete the simple online form and we will always do our best to promote events and activities on the Hedon Blog. Posters, text and artwork can be e-mailed directly to hedonblog@gmx.com with ‘What’s On’ in the subject line.

If you go to the Club, you can also send us Reviews of an event – let other people know how much you enjoyed it; pass on your thanks to the organisers, etc.

NOTE: You should also consider sending details of your event to Seaside FM.
