Fairy Tale Snow!

IN A “FAIRY TALE MOMENT” it began to snow at the switch on of Hedon’s Christmas Lights last night!

Thanks must go to the groups that set up stalls and other activities, and also to Hedon Town Council for creating a fantastic winter wonderland event in the town centre. And how on Earth did you manage to book the snow!?

Councillor versus Councillor: Maintaining honourable standards

A HEDON TOWN COUNCILLOR has recently been investigated by the East Riding Council following a complaint made against him.

The complainant was the Councillor himself!

Find out more about this bizarre case, which suggests that changes need to be made to the system that monitors our representatives, over on HU12 now.

Christmas Lights Switch On

THE SWITCH ON of Hedon’s Christmas Lights tomorrow (Fri 26th Nov 2010) is always a popular event with its stalls, rides, hot-chesnuts, carol singing and other attractions.
However this year, the seasonal weather – with the possibility of snow – should add a really festive atmosphere to the occasion. The secret is to bring lots of warm clothing, scarves, hats and gloves, but also take advantage of the many indoor attractions available as well as those outdoor. You can visit Alexandra Hall where warm and other refreshments will be available; you can also visit the warm interiors of the local pubs and the shops that will be open.

An interesting attraction on the evening will be at the Game People Shop in George Street. Mike Pearce says the shop will be opening late and holding a demonstration of the Kinect for the Xbox 360. He invites people to come and have a look at this amazing brand-new gaming technology!

Those travelling by car should note that parking is available at the Iveson Close Car Park, Johnsons Corner Car Park, Market Hill and surrounding on-street parking.

Severe weather warning

A BLANKET OF SNOW and sub-zero temperatures greeted us all as we awoke in Hedon this morning.

If you have to go out then you might want to keep an eye on the Met Office weather gadget on HU12 and the advice from the Highways Agency and the East Riding CouncilEast Yorshire Motor Services are also posting updates on how the weather is affecting their buses. Full updates will be posted on their  website throughout the day.  You can also follow them at www.twitter.com/EYBuses for updates.

Christmas Carol concert – with a difference!

THE STATION PUB hosts the Hedon Singers on Wednesday 22nd December 2010 starting at 9:00pm’ish.
The Station Fireside
Nothing strange there you might think? Wrong! The Hedon Singers are a group of regulars at the Souttergate pub, who at Christmas once a year have a strange urge to belt out traditional Christmas Carols at full volume!

The evening is lots of fun with everyone encouraged to join in the singing if they wish (song sheets provided) – and, as if affected by that strange magic of Christmas, people do join in and thoroughly enjoy themselves! This is reminiscent of the old traditional pub-sing-alongs!

This is a simple but enjoyable night! Here’s the official blurb from Jackie the Landlady:

“A group of customers who come in the pub all the year round called the Hedon Singers  WHO DO NOT NORMALLY SING  will be singing carols.  This is a lovely evening everyone is handed a song sheet and are welcome to join in. Last year a hat was passed round and money was raised for cancer research as one of the group had passed away.”

Your hosts Carl and Jackie look forward to seeing you all on the 22nd December!

NOTE: If you have a community, entertainment or public event taking place in Hedon and area then please complete the simple online form and we will do our best to promote this on the Blog.

Getting ready for snow!

THE MET OFFICE has released an advisory severe weather warning for the Yorkshire and Humber area leading up to the weekend.
Snowy Havenside

“There is a moderate risk of severe weather on Thursday (25th Nov 2010). There is potential for snow showers to become frequent in places giving localised accumulations of 2-5 cm of snow inland with 10 cm or more on high ground.”

East Riding of Yorkshire Council says that it is well prepared for the winter. Its fleet of salt spreaders and snow-ploughs is prepared for the onset of any freezing conditions. Up to 21 gritters can spread between 160 and 320 Tonnes of salt on each turnout.
