Waste Water – What happens at Saltend plant?

BLOG ACTION DAY 2010: WATER

THE WASTE WATER treatment works at Saltend certainly makes its presence felt on occasions via bad odours (which Yorkshire Water have pledged to tackle) – but what actually happens there? This is the question put to Yorkshire Water (YW) who provided a fascinating insight ‘behind-the-scenes’.

On average people in Yorkshire use about 150 litres of water a day through washing, cleansing, drinking and toilet flushes. 95% of this water returns to YW via our toilets, washing machines and sinks. 20,000 miles of sewers takes this, and drained surface water, to 0ne of 631 waste water treatment works (WWTW) across the region.

Large objects are removed first at the WWTW . Metal bars trap larger objects brought via the sewers such as nappies, rags, paper and other toilet debris.

Silver lining in the cloud as Halifax closes

THE HALIFAX AGENCY based at John Dennis, Chartered Surveyor and Estate Agent premises in Hedon, closed yesterday. The prospect of closure had prompted anger from local residents and Halifax customers and led to a petition and a campaign in opposition.

John Dennis, has released the following statement about the closure. The statement contains good news about enhanced replacement services being put in place at the 21, St Augustine’s premises:

“I know the closure of the HALIFAX Agency at my office has come as quite a blow to our many customers – and of course to my firm and its staff, however it isn’t all bad news.

After serving the Halifax for 10 years at our office in St. Augustine’s Gate in Hedon, I was informed, in July, by the powers that be within the Lloyds Banking Group that they no longer wish to continue using independent agencies in locations such as this. So we, along with 249 others around the country are having that contract terminated, our agency being ended with effect from 14th October. Bad news, not only for us and our staff, but also those many faithful customers who have relied upon the Halifax for so long.

However I’ve not allowed the grass to grow beneath my feet and have been successful in securing an agency with the Santander Bank, who have been actively seeking out around 100 of the most successful Halifax Agents and recruiting them to their brand. This means that our old customers can continue to come into the office and carry out their banking as they always have, simply by opening an account with our new bank.

Inmans Road Lagoon Maintenance

Click for larger images

Post from Jim Uney

JUDGING BY PHOTOGRAPHS taken on Saturday 9th of October it appears that Yorkshire Water have not yet started “the ongoing maintenance programme for Inmans Road Lagoon” previously mentioned by (Hedon Town) Councillor Lindop in his last posting.

The main gateway is completely overgrown, with the gate appearing not to have been opened for a long time.

One thing that is confirmed is that the Lagoon has become a wild-life haven for birds, and no doubt other wild-life, but maybe this is not a major problem, it’s the reliability of the hardware, valves etc, and the lack of permanent pumps which is the outstanding concern.

According to Councillor Lindop’s notes of a previous meeting with Yorkshire Water, They are considering to install Emergency Pump Couplings, Soon. What is required is a Permanent Pump fitted in place, ready to go when required, not the possibility of having to chase off to the other side of the County to borrow one!

Welcome Information from Councillor

The following article has been received from Jim Uney:

MANY THANKS are due to Councillor Jim Lindop for his strictly unofficial notes from Hedon Town Council meetings, more accurate and interesting news now filters through to Hedon residents who happen to read The Hedon Blog on the internet.

Is it not possible to make these comments a regular feature, on any subject, and make them part of Hedon Town Council’s attempt to inform the public on Council matters much easier?

No doubt some will say that we already have a Town Council website, but it is infrequently updated and is not a source of easily obtained information on Council matters. To date, the last published minutes of a Town Council meeting was 22nd of July 2010, these were reporting the confirmation of the minutes or to receive the minutes of various committees.

Jim Uney, Hedon.

See: Briefing Note 23rd Sept and Planning Meeting 9th Sept 2010 for briefing notes from Councillor Lindop.
