Brown wheelie bin changes start in Hedon

THE EAST RIDING COUNCIL has agreed a number of changes to its kerbside wheelie bin services which will come into operation over the next few months:

  • Brown bins will be used for food and kitchen waste and cardboard as well as garden waste;
  • Blue bins will be able to be used for glass and household batteries.

The changes to the Brown bin collection service will start in Hedon first. Although residents are asked to wait until they recieve information from the Council before they start adding any new items to any bins.

Amy Emmerson and Karen Woods are the Household Waste Advisers with the Council and their role is to answer any questions people have about the new Brown bin roll-out and recycling service. Amy said:

The changes include being able to put food waste and cardboad into the brown bin as well as the garden and green waste which can go in currently.  All households will recieve a kitchen caddy and biodegradable liners for their food waste which they can use to transport the food waste to the big brown bin.”

Information on the roll-out schedule is available on the recycling website for the region www.target45plus.org.uk at this news page.

Further information can be found in the current East Riding News (which can be downloaded from the East Riding Council website). The Council also has a recycling hotline on 01482 395586.

Yorkshire Day 2010 in Hedon!

YORKSHIRE DAY celebrated in Hedon on Sunday 1st August 2010.

The celebrations are held as a way of making people more aware of “all things Yorkshire” and the county’s proud history and traditional heritage.

Hedon Town Council has invited civic guests from the whole of Yorkshire who will be coming to Hedon for a parade from the Market Place at 10.15am followed by a Church service, led by the Bishop of Hull, in St. Augustine’s Church at 11.00am.

St. Augustine’s is known as “The King of Holderness” and will be open to the public, including its Belfry Tower, from 2pm.

Yorkshire Day is also when the ‘declarations of integrity‘ should be read in five different dialects from modern English to old Norse. The readings commence at the time that coincides with the number of years since the first recorded reference to the three Ridings of Yorkshire in the year 876. This year following tradition it should be at 11.34am.

Evening celebrations will start at 6.00pm on Market Hill with Frankie Dean and his Mississippi Dixielanders Jazz Band providing family entertainment in New Orleans style – not exactly Yorkshire, but fantastic all the same! Other stalls and refreshments will be available.

A traditional ‘hog roast’ will be cooked for the evening. And to signify the importance of the event, the Hedon Beacon will be lit at 9.15pm, followed by a fireworks Grand Finale!

Hedon Town Council says: “This is a really prestigious event and the first time it has been held in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Come along and celebrate all things Yorkshire !!!”

So lets get out our white roses and Yorkshire Puddings and get ready for a real regional celebration in Hedon!

Hedon United AFC memorabilia

DO YOU KNOW of anyone interested in local football memorabilia? asks a recent comment left on the Blog:

S J Wyllys is trying to find someone who would be interested in an old letter, dated 1932, about Hedon United AFC.

It came into my possession when I bought a job lot of postal ‘covers’ (envelopes) at an auction, most of which were empty.
This envelope (handwritten in the lovely script of the time, and with two King George V stamps, postmarked Hedon, 4 Sept 1932) contains the letter… I just wondered if anybody keeps the archives of Hedon United AFC, and would like to add this to the records.  The letter is written on Hedon United AFC headed paper with details of Chairman, Hon. Sec. and Hon. Treas.  I am happy to send it to whoever wants it.”

The short letter was written by Frederick G. Parker of Church Lane, Hedon and sent to a Mr Knight in Essex and comments on the fact that the team had just won Bridlington Trinity 2 – 1 despite being short of three players (Cripps, Cheeseman and Heron).

If you have an interest in obtaining the letter then leave a comment or drop off an e-mail to the Hedon Blog at hedonblog@gmx.com expressing your interest and we’ll put you in touch with S J Wyllys.

… And if anybody in Hedon or the Blogosphere can shed a little bit more light on Hedon’s footballing history then please let the Hedon Blog know.

Adult Education Course Guide

THE EAST RIDING COUNCIL has produced its new Course Guide for the Adult Education Service.

In 2010 the Adult Education Service went through its Ofsted Inspection where the overall effectiveness of the Service was judged to be good, with equality and diversity as outstanding. The Ofsted report also commented on the fact that “Enthusiastic and supportive tutors share their passion for their subject and motivate learners”.

So this looks like a good time to spread the word about the benefits of adult learning as widely as possible.

Hedon Toad

My favourite toad "Punkphibian"

WHILE THE CLIPPER RACE dominated the news at the weekend, it was the “Invasion of the Toads” that attracted the Hedon Blog’s attention, and will attract public attention over the next 10 weeks.

This year Hull is celebrating the life of Philip Larkin. He did two poems about toads – hence the idea to celebrate his life by producing 40 giant fibreglass toads! Probably a good job he did not publish the Woolly Mammoth verse!?

Whatever your feelings about the Toads, there was no mistaking their attraction with people queuing up to photograph each other stood next to one!

The toads are actually quite nice! They are a really quirky way to get people involved in appreciating public art.

Now while the Toads are focussed on Hull, not all of them are situated there. The “Magenta Toad” is located in Melton, and “Tannery Toad” is in Beverley. One of them “Three Quarter Sky” is a touring toad and will change its location each week. So…. what about having a toad in Hedon?

What kind of “Hedon Toad” could represent the best characteristics of the town? Where could we put it?

If you are interested in anything and everything Larkin and toady, then have a look at the BARTIE-BLOG. Dave Bartlett is photographing the toads and publishing the essential background to each.

…. Off now, drawing my idea for the Hedon Toad!

Co-operative Police in Hedon Surgery

HUMBERSIDE POLICE latest Police Surgery takes place today Saturday 17th July at 3.00pm at the Hedon Co-op on Hull Road.

So if you want to drop in for a ‘cuppa and a copper’, get advice and/or find out more about police services in the town, then this is an opportunity for you to meet privately with a member of the neighbourhood police team to discuss any policing issue of concern. They are drop-in events so you may have to wait a few minutes.

Google Ads on Hedon Blog

READERS have commented on the Google Adverts that appear on some articles in the Hedon Blog. They have nothing to do with the Hedon Blog but are placed there by WordPress.Com who are the excellent blogging company that host the Hedon Blog. This is one of the unfortunate side affects of this free service.
