Does somebody have to get killed crossing the road…?

“Does somebody have to get killed first before they do something about it!”

This has been the refrain from many people angry at the time it takes to be able to cross the road at the point where Hull Road becomes New Road in Hedon.

Trying to cross this road between the teatime hours of 4pm – 6pm can be extremely difficult. At times the traffic is ‘bonnet to boot’ both ways and it takes a considerate motorist to stop to enable people to cross the road. On some occasions you can be stood for several minutes waiting to cross. And of course the problem is made worse if you are not quick on your feet or able to make that quick dash when opportunity allows!

It is believed that local residents campaigned on this issue a few years ago and even completed a petition asking for a crossing point to be installed.

However, perhaps it is time that residents re-launched this campaign before an accident does occur!?

Below is the crossing area and the cut-through to Draper’s Lane at a less busy time:

Have you experienced problems crossing at this point or aware of others that have?

Housing plans threaten Preston countryside?

Preston in Watercolour

THE HULL DAILY MAIL is reporting that some Preston residents are forming an action group to oppose plans by the East Riding Council to build 20 new homes in Manor Road.

The protestors are concerned about the loss of ancient hedgerows and wildlife.

The possible impact of increased traffic in the town is also a source of worry.

Openly Local about East Riding of Yorkshire Council

OpenlyLocal is a website that aims to help make local government more transparent. By using different sources of ‘free-to-use’ government and other public data it builds up a picture of a local council or ward area.

Have a look at the OpenlyLocal entry for the East Riding Council and then for Council Services. Try putting in your post code: See the example based on post-code HU12 8EX.

The website even contains some information about local websites!

Eventually OpenlyLocal will contain a list of forthcoming East Riding Council committee meetings and the Hedon Blog will be able to easily share and bring that information to your attention.

A special website tool (it’s called a widget!) is available to make the task of using OpenlyLocal easier directly from local blogs and community websites. Unfortunately the Hedon Blog can’t use that tool but we can over on HU12.net – have a look at the top-right side-bar.

The advantage of OpenlyLocal is that it is easy to use and search. Perhaps this can not always be said for council websites?

Energy and Waste: What do you think?

ELECTION 2010: THE BBC POLITICS SHOW has featured a debate on Energy and Waste which included Beverley and Holderness Conservative candidate Graham Stuart.

Here are some snippets taken from Graham Stuart’s comments on the programme that indicate his policy positions on three key issues. But what do you think?

NUCLEAR POWER: Government advisers have said that black-outs could take place as early as 2016. Without nuclear power we can not deliver our energy needs. We need to speed up the process to get nuclear power stations on to the national grid as soon as possible.

WIND TURBINES: Objections to wind turbines from local people have been overturned and the issue has divided local communities. Change should not be forced on local communities. We must let them have their say!

RE-CYCLING: Government should use its procurement power (i.e. the power to buy and commission services – Ed) to support the use of re-cycled materials. We should reward people for re-cycling rather than fine them for not!

Would you like to hear what the other candidates have to say on these issues?
