Local neighbourhood policing delivering results?

Humberside Police Authority LogoPolicing in the region has experienced a massive boost in neighbourhood based staff according to the Local Policing Summary that has recently been circulated in Hedon.

Alene Branton, veteran of the Neighbourhood Watch movement and Chair of Humberside Police Authority states that we now have 2091 police officers, 1456 police staff, 319 PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers), 374 special constables and 109 volunteers all working together for the benefit of their neighbourhoods:

“This strong investment in local policing has been heavily supported by communities, partnerships and the voluntary sector and together neighbourhoods are becoming safer”

Locally in Hedon latest figures indicate that the neighbourhood approach is working: South & Mid Holderness area has the lowest recorded crime and the lowest recorded calls regarding Anti Social Behaviour in the East Riding of Yorkshire (see Humberside Police Website Local Crime Mapping and News for the Local Area).

So what do local residents think? Is Hedon a safe and enjoyable place to live and work? Leave a comment with your observations.

New Flyer to promote the Hedon Blog

The advantage of a blog is that you can canvass opinion in the virtual world before deciding to spend money on printing in the real world!

So I’m seeking comments and views on this flyer before getting thousands circulated to the HU12 post code area.

What do you think? It is posted below as a Scribd iPaper document and here as a PDF (updated 25th September):

Hedon News Issue 11

Hedon News 11

The current Sept/Oct 2009 issue of the Hedon Newsletter is now available from local shops, pubs and public buildings.

The HOTI campaign against the Waste Incinerator features on the front page. Don’t forget to join the March against the Incinerator meeting at the Co-op Car Park on Sat 3rd October 2009.

The Station Hotel has an advert on page 3 although it’s referred to as the Station Inn? Jackie and Carl are the new managers at this pleasant and friendly pub. My history sources tell me that the Station has been previously known as the Durham Ox, The Sun (not to be confused with The Sun that stood in St Augustine’s Gate in later times) and The Governor’s House in the past. Whatever the name let us give a real Hedon welcome to the new Governors of the Station.

Of course we must also mention the Shakespeare and Haven Arms which also have adverts in this particular edition of Hedon News.

The newsletter contains information about the proposed Park & Ride facility in Hedon, the Holderness Anti-Flood Scheme which will see Hedon waterways shored up, and a useful warning to residents on the threats posed by bogus workers cold calling your home.

You can also advertise in the newsletter – a small box costs £16 and a full page only £60.

But don’t just read about the Hedon Newsletter – read the real thing!

Hull Freedom Festival 2009 generates local pride and optimism

Hull & HumberThe Hull Freedom Festival with stars like Peter Andre and Pixie Lott, and the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race with the UK being represented by the yacht “Hull & Humber”, have put Hull on the international map and created unprecedented local pride amongst Hull and East Yorkshire folk. The atmosphere in the city centre was tangible it could almost be felt, touched and tasted!

Humberside Police estimated that up to 150,000 people attended Hull City Centre events during the last weekend of 12th and 13th September 2009. I have never seen so many people in Hull City Centre! But it was not just Hull, but crowds gathered at Paull, Aldborough and Cleethorpes to follow the start of the Clipper Race.

There may be serious issues associated with the staging of the event to debate in the future – but for now lets celebrate!

March and Rally against Waste Incinerator 3rd October 2009

March and Rally

HOTI News LogoA call to action has been issued to people in Hull and Holderness to join a protest march and rally against the building of a waste incinerator at Saltend near Hedon.

The march will assemble in the Co-op car park at 10.30am on Saturday 3rd October and will march up to the top of the Hedon Road flyover. The march will be a family event with a ‘toxic’ theme and prizes will be given away for the best dressed-up ‘anti-toxic’ children.

Local people of all ages are being asked to come out in force and bring banners and placards with their town, village and neighbourhood names on.

Public Meeting Report

At a public meeting last night, campaigning group HOTI maintained that the type of incinerator being built by WRG (Waste Recycling Group) will use “yesterday’s technology” with risks that contaminants and pollutants could have detrimental affects on the environment and health of local people.

The message I gleaned from the meeting attended by over 50 people, was that HOTI is not simply a bunch of “NIMBYs” (Not In My Back Yard) that narrow-mindedly campaigns against something that affects just Hedon and area, but is making a principled stand against a particular method of incineration. The group is not against the idea of waste recycling, but believes there are far more environmentally friendly options available.

HOTI has fought an effective campaign over the last four years and raised awareness of the incinerator issue and have successfully challenged and delayed the plans to build it. The group is continuing to challenge and has started legal and administrative proceedings:

We believe that the contract that the councils have with WRG may not valid, we are challenging the contract via the EU commission.

We believe that the operating permit issued by the Environment Agency has a number of anomalies, the issues are being challenged in the high court with the help of friends of the earth.

From HOTI News Website

However, these challenges do not affect WRG’s current planning permission and operating permit and therefore steps are being taken now to actually build the incinerator. This means that the public show of opposition on October 3rd is even more important.

HOTI BOND

HOTI’s legal challenge MAY need serious funding to contest. If the organisation’s legal challenge fails then the costs to HOTI could be in the region of £5,000 – £20,000 pounds. So people are being asked to support the organisation by buying a HOTI Bond. The funding raised will be deposited in a special bank account and ONLY USED to pay for legal fees. Any monies left after the legal action is complete will be returned to the Bondholders on a pro rata basis.

Amounts have been set for the costs of a bond in order to keep administration simple and clear for people to understand i.e.  Family bond £50, Adult bond £20 and a Junior bond £10 but the organisers will accept any amounts.

HOTI Bonds can be purchased from the reception at John P Dennis & Son Ltd, 21, St Augustines Gate, Hedon, HULL, East Yorkshire, HU12 8EU

And finally….

The campaign trail has now been set for the HOTI Campaign and this Hedon Blog asks other local people to show their support!

Hedon Haven Restoration Project

Saltend Boat WreckDuring the 10th and 11th centuries the river Humber was a dangerous place with ships being attacked by pirates. Having a safe place to moor was very important. The Hedon Haven was one such safe place.

By the late 12th and early 13th Century Hedon was considered one of the major ports in England.

The development of Hull as a deepwater port able to berth larger ships led to Hedon’s maritime decline. However Hedon Haven continued to be used for smaller vessels right up until 1974.

Local MP Graham Stuart has helped publicise a noticeboard that celebrates the history of the town’s historic waterway and former port. The noticeboard erected by the Hedon Haven Restoration Project is situated on what was the bank of the Haven.

As explained on Graham Stuart MP’s Website, the volunteers behind the Restoration Project hope that the haven can be re-opened and used once again for maritime purposes. The project would hope to provide a tourist attraction for the area with a visitor centre, hotel and country park.
