Community Speed Watch may come to Holderness

Speed Indicator SignA Police Forum has revealed suggestions for possibly piloting a new Community Speedwatch scheme in the Mid and South West Holderness Ward area.

If the idea is successful in gaining the necessary support from fundholders and police bosses, then a Community Speed Watch would aim to help people reduce speeding traffic though their communities. The scheme would support trained volunteers to work within their communities to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding and to help control the problem locally.

Community Speed Watch incorporates poster and sign campaigns linked to direct action using speed guns. The use of the devices will lead to speeding drivers being sent warning letters from the police.

The Police Forum meeting held in Hedon Town Hall last night was attended by local community policemen Sergeant Tony Towse and PC Bob Pyle and chaired by Victoria Wise from Humberside Police Authority.

Residents interested in the Community Speed Watch and other local neighbourhood policing issues were advised to keep an eye on the Humberside Police South West Holderness Neighbourhood Police Team website.

European Parliamentary Elections

Europe Elections 2009 LogoVoting for the European Parliament will take place on 4 June and local residents are being urged by the East Riding Council to make sure they are registered.

This was timely advice for this Blogger who was still registered to vote in Blackpool! Phew! Just managed to get registered in time! The Duff votes just might make a difference!?

There are 6 members of the European Parliament from the Yorkshire and Humber Region and a list of candidates is available from the East Riding Council. I found four of them with addresses listed in East Yorkshire or Hull.

To see what leaflets have been delivered for these elections from the different parties, then have a look at The Straight Choice which is a live election leaflet monitoring project.

Hedon – Tourist Destination

St Augustines - King of Holderness

St Augustines - King of Holderness

The Yorkshire Post today reports on tourist industry plans to draw in waves of new visitors to the region. The recession has prompted lots of people to re-think their holiday plans with more opting to stay in the UK. In response tourism chiefs are stepping up their activities to attract visiting holidaymakers to Yorkshire.

In response I’ve added a link to the Real Yorkshire website article about Hedon for tourists.

The link is in Attractions on the right-hand side-bar.

Hedon is indeed a charming Market town! If you are planning a visit to Yorkshire, UK then don’t forget to visit us!

Enterprising Seaside Resort Regeneration

The issue of seaside resort regeneration featured in the media a few times last week.

Firstly BBC’s The Apprentice featured a light-hearted approach to the very real problem of Margate’s degeneration as reported by the Telegraph. Then VisitBlackpool launched its J’aime la Tour video which aimed at encouraging French tourists to visit the town. I think this will become a modern advertising classic!

But perhaps the best news during the week was Scarborough winning the award as the most enterprising place in Europe!

The Hedon Blog would be keen to hear what is happening in our local seaside resorts to promote their regeneration.

I’ve chosen the Blackpool video to feature today because I love it! Anyone for ‘Otpot’ – Oui!

Silver Surfers’ Day 2009 #ssd09 – video

It’s Silver Surfers’ Day today facilitated by the good folk at Digital Unite.

This short video (2m.49s) from Silver Surfers TV puts the case for older people getting online and utilising the benefits of the internet.

Lots of well known faces (whether ‘silver’ or not!) explain what they get out of the internet. Newscaster Martyn Lewis sums it up for me with the comments: -

“it is life-transforming!”
