Schools in the East Riding, including Inmans Primary School in Hedon have been warned to spend excess funding by the end of the financial year or risk losing it!
Last year £23,000 was reclaimed from Inmans.
Apparently, reclaimed funds are re-distributed to more needy schools. Whilst there are undoubtedly some merits in this redistribution of wealth – there is, however, the risk that schools might be encouraged to spend excess funds in haste raising the risks of possible ‘careless’ or unwise expenditure.
This website – as well as giving me a blogging hobby – does seem to have identified a gap in Hedon. That is the lack of an online presence for the town.
The Town Council website attempts to do this and does feature quite highly in a Google search – after the HEDON Household Energy Network and Hedonism (yes – some unfortunate misunderstandings can be made when contemplating a visit to this family-friendly Hedon Blog!). However, the Town Council site is not updated regularly and does not cover all aspects related to the town. It also lacks a comment facility allowing genuine interactivity with readers.
So is there room for a new website HEDON ONLINE or HU12 ONLINE that intends to bring really ‘hyper-local’ information to the inhabitants and visitors to Hedon? Such a service could feature news items directly affecting the town, information on public, business and voluntary services available. Everything town related – from the timings of the local free ASDA bus, the chemist opening hours, to the entertainment at the local pubs – could be covered.
Those residents with issues to share, complaints and compliments to make about services, with stories to tell about the town and its character would find a platform to debate these and collaborate and network with other residents.
All in all it could be a one-stop-shop on everything about Hedon?
So should such a site be created? Would the people of Hedon engage with it?
During the next few months I intend to explore the feasibility of launching such a site, its promotion, maintenance and potential developments as the internet itself develops over the next few years.
But what do you think? This site’s readers number only in the dozens but your participation in the straw poll is requested – please help.
Sirius is an advice service for small businesses established with the support of BP Chemicals. BP has a massive complex at Saltend just to the West of Hedon which dominates the local skyline. Sirius was set up as part of BP’s corporate responsibility program to put something back into local communities.
Sirius offers loans and support to help establish small businesses. The agency helped this Blog author run a small community newsletter in North Hull in 1999 by sponsoring a series of adverts. The support offered is outlined on the Sirius Website:
The type of business support offered ranges from free advice on office rentals and business administration to guidance on imports, tax, marketing and cash flow management. Sirius also signposts applicants on to other potential sources of funding and has excellent working relationships with local banks and other support agencies.
Sirius also offers loans, typically between £5,000 and £7,000 to local new or expanding small businesses. Alongside the loans, the programme offers business advice on financial and commercial matters. There have very few Sirius business failures since the loan fund was established, mainly due to our on-going support, mentoring and intensive help when things ‘get tough’!.
The loan fund is open to applications from anyone in the designated area, of Hull and Holderness. This includes Beverley, Cottingham, Anlaby and Hornsesa.
Sirius is located on Hedon’s main street at St Augustine’s Gate.
Major news for the East Riding! In moves which seem to buck the national trend of being cautious and putting regeneration projects on hold, the East Riding Council is to embark on a recession-busting public expenditure programme that includes building 350 new council homes and creating 500 new jobs.
RUSH LYVARS is a lake in Hedon that is visited by fishing folk from across the region. The site is really a collection of smaller lakes criss-crossed by a series of connecting wooden bridges.
It’s a beautiful area that is just a few minutes walk from Hedon Town centre on Preston Rd, Hedon, Hull, North Humberside, HU12 8JU Tel: 01482 898970.
See Plaul Glazzard’s photo (which is much better than my snap) on Geograph to get a glimpse of Rush Lyvas in all its glory! See a guide to the lake on Waterscape.Com.
Of interest are the following statistics relating to the Ward ‘compared to this time last year’:
ALL CRIME has decreased by 41.8%
Robbery has decreased by 100%
Anti Social Behaviour has decreased by 36.7%
Violence has decreased by 12%
Burglary has increased by 53.8%
Vehicle crime has increased by 61.5%
I think such online information is extremely valuable – particularly when local residents are being asked their opinions about what local priorities are or should be.
Despite local ONLINE police services improving dramatically – perhaps they still fall some way short of information available to US citizens as this from Oakland Crimespotting demonstrates?
