time-on-my-hands-picture‘TIME ON MY HANDS’ is a set of three DVDs that captures on film the lifetime experiences of over 50 folk living in the Holderness towns of Hedon, Withernsea and Hornsea.

The ‘stars’ of the DVDs are local residents who have been encouraged to tell their stories about their lives and the events that shaped them. With an easy conversational style, interspaced with occasional pictures from historical archives, it is really like having the people themselves sat in your living room.

The DVDs represent only a proportion of over 60 hours of recorded reminiscences but contains a real treasure trove of memories that – if not recorded for this project – might otherwise have been lost forever!

Hear about Hedon Aerodrome and race course, listen to the song about Sunday trips to Withernsea – discover the real life dramas that occured during World War II.

Congratulations to Lyz Turner from Withernsea Lighthouse Museum for organising the project and collecting and recording these valuable memories. You can find more about the project and see clips via the BBC Radio Humberside website or get information from any of the museums in the area.

You can also borrow copies from your local library.

After viewing the DVDs you might be prompted to get involved with your own oral history project? If so, guidance is available from Harvard College, USA website DoHistory – Step-by-Step Guide to Oral History.
