UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT” states the Holderness Gazette this week (Thursday 7 March 2024) as it announces that editor Sam Hawcroft and production/sales manager Zoe Broom have bought out the Gazette from its previous owner Brian Adcock.

This is good news for Holderness as it puts people passionate about reporting local news firmly in the driving seat of our local newspaper. In her editorial this week, new co-owner and continuing editor Sam states about her and Zoe: “It’s a challenge that’s daunting and exciting in equal measure, but we both believe in this little publication and are passionate about the community it serves.”

In response to those who say that printed newspapers are not relevant in a world dominated by ‘free’ news-providing online tech giants, Sam in this week’s Editor’s Notes, says: “Many would ask what the point of a newspaper is in the 21st century. I’ve said this before but I still believe that they have a place and that print is not dying, it’s being killed off in some quarters. As the internet becomes ever more a bin fire of propaganda, hatred and scamming, I think print is still seen as a more trusted medium.”

As well as being entirely run by local people, the Gazette adds to its “Serving your community since 1910” byline header today the words “still proudly independent.” In a world where the media is generally dominated by large corporate interests, this must surely be something to be welcomed and supported.

Keep an eye on the Holderness Gazette for the latest news and developments and make sure you buy your weekly copy from the newsagents (75p). Alternatively, you can now buy a digital edition.
