IT HAS BEEN proposed by the Boundary Commission for England (BCE) that in 2023 a new Kingston Upon Hull East Parliamentary County Constituency is formed that would incorporate the current South West Holderness Ward (Hedon, Paull, Preston, Thorngumbald, etc).
The BCE has published its initial proposals for new constituency boundaries. They invite the public to view and provide feedback on the proposed boundaries as part of an eight-week consultation process.
In our local area, it is proposed that a new Kingston Upon Hull East County Constituency would stretch from the Sutton Ward (Hull) and Preston in the North, Drypool Ward (Hull) in the West, to Paull parish in the South and Thorngumbald, Camerton and Ryehill in the East.
Wards included in the new constituency would be:
- Drypool
- Holderness
- Ings
- Longhill and Bilton Grange
- Marfleet
- South West Holderness
- Southcoates
- Sutton
A new coastal Bridlington and Holderness County Constituency is proposed encompassing Flamborough in the North, Wawne in the West and Spurn in the South. This would include Mid Holderness, North Holderness and South East Holderness Wards.
Beverley would be included in a new Beverley and The Wolds County Constituency.
The BCE has explained its criteria for proposing its changes:
“While retaining the overall number of constituencies across the UK at 650, the rules apply a distribution formula that results in an increase in the number of constituencies in England (from 533 to 543). The rules also require that every recommended constituency across the UK – apart from two specified exceptions in England – must have an electorate that is no smaller than 69,724 and no larger than 77,062.”
“As far as possible, we try to have regard to local ties, geographic factors, local government boundaries (as they were known at 1 December 2020), existing constituencies, and minimising disruption caused by proposed change.”

Members of the public are encouraged to visit the BCE website to view maps showing the proposed new boundaries and provide feedback before the consultation closes on Monday 2 August 2021. People can comment on anything from where the proposed new boundary lines are, to the names of the constituencies.
There will be a further two rounds of consultation in 2022. Following the conclusion of all three consultation periods, the Commission will look at all the evidence received before forming its final recommendations.

When a similar proposal was considered by the BCE in 2011, it was eventually decided to retain the existing constituency of Beverley and Holderness.

My husband and I definitely do not wish to be put in the Hull boundary. Leave HU12 alone. For once listen to the voters
We do not wish to be part of Hull east. These changes make no sense. Cottingham and Bilton are closer to Hull, but they are not joining with Hull. Just leave us as we are.
I do not wish to be part of Hull east. I live very happily in Preston, East Yorkshire and wish for it to remain so. The advantages for this change would be for Hull City Council with added council taxes from housing and all the proposed industrial developments!
