Traditional scramble for pennies at the Hedon Penny Throwing
Traditional scramble for pennies at the Hedon Penny Throwing 2015

PARENTS AND CHILDREN should note that on Thursday 16 May 2019 at 7:00 pm is the annual Hedon Penny Throwing ceremony outside the Hedon Town Hall on Saint Augustine’s Gate!

The new 673rd Mayor of Hedon invites children of the town to scramble and collect the civic pennies!

Penny 1p detail

The Hedon Penny Throwing event is one of the most peculiar events in Hedon’s civic calendar. Steeped in history, it is a parody of the days when Hedon was a “rotten borough” with people being offered money to vote for a particular Mayoral candidate in elections.

Following their appointment, the incumbent Mayor would pay off his supporters. Today the event is purely a family fun occasion and the first public act of each new Mayor. Children are ‘thrown’ pennies by the new Mayor, the town’s civic leaders and their guests.
