THIS MATCH REPORT for Saturday 20th April 2013 has been written by South Holderness Cricket Club President – and Umpire for the match – Malc Ripley. I would like to thank Malc for his and the Club’s hospitality on Saturday. It was a hot sunny day watching the cricket at Middle Lane, Hedon – and I’ve never been quite so relaxed (or sat down for so long) for ages!  And the bottle of beer from the Club Pavilion obviously helped! A great few hours! If you have never been to the cricket before – then give it a go! It’s a pleasure! – Ray Duffill

COMPARED to the last two Summers, no rain and warm sunshine, albeit with a biting wind, heralded the first encounter of a new season at Middle Lane, when the An Xl entertained Skidby CC on what turned out to be a dry pitch, together with free-flowing out field!

The visitors batted first, with their skipper and left-handed opener Carl Bevan virtually playing a lone role in their 38 over total of 168 all out. His attractive effort of 121, including 11 well struck fours and four sixes, certainly played a huge part, as the next highest scorer was just 15 from Dan McGowan, who lent valuable support.

For the Holderness second string, Chris White’s 13 accurate overs gave him figures of 3 for 30, while all-rounders Lewis Duell (2 for 21) and the returning Scott Crane, from Australia, (2 for 18 ), supported by young Club Head Coach, Conn Brattan (2 for 18) certainly made inroads into some frail batting by Skidby.

The promising Duell, then  opened with nine boundaries in a hard-hitting 53, to complete a fine all round effort, whilst adding 93 for their first wicket for the winners, with wicket-keeper Jamie Walkley hitting  seven fours in a supportive 38. After they were dismissed, useful batting by Scott Crane (33 no) together with the very promising 14-year-old Jack Riley, with his undefeated 19, earned the Hedon side an easy eight wicket success in good time.

The overall performance was particularly satisfying, with the Match Ball Sponsor being Beercock, Wiles & Wick, Estate Agents of Hedon, as the team suffered the indignity of relegation from Division 1 of the York Eastern Conference in 2012.
