Reunion – 70th Anniversary of Paull School blast

A 70th ANNIVERSARY REUNION has been organised for those with memories of a wartime incident on 7th April 1943 when a barrage balloon exploded near to Paull School blowing in the windows, destroying the roof and closing the building for nine months.

“…disaster struck the school when a barrage balloon moored in the Humber crashed down in a storm and exploded next to the school… (which was) devastated in a split second… The air in the classrooms became thick with dust, soot and smoke, and the children scrambled over debris to safety in the street where they were reunited with worried parents…” – extract taken from Paull Heritage Trail by Paul Cross.

The reunion event hopes to attract some of those 40 pupils who were present at the school when the incident occurred. It will be an opportunity to reminisce about the incident and about life generally in the village during wartime.

The reunion takes place at the Paull Village Hall on Sunday 7th April 2013 from 1:30pm – 4:00pm. Ex-pupils are cordially invited, but the event will also be of interest to anyone wanting to learn more about the wartime history of Paull.
