Down to Division Two for local Cricket Team

6:39 am

THE FINAL MATCH in South Holderness Cricket Club An Xl’s rain bedraggled summer, resulted in their Middle Lane game against Cherry Burton lasting a mere 11.1 overs, before heavy rain put paid to their season, with the visitors on 34 for 1 wicket, with Jack Law finishing with an unbeaten 18.

As a result of the abandonment, the Hedon side are relegated into Division Two of the York Eastern Conference, to round off a poor display with just two successes to their name.

The heavy rain also sadly put paid to South Holderness Cricket Club’s long serving pair of Phil Allison and Neil Green having their last chance batting at the crease following their retirement announcement!

On the batting front, the former goes with a highest score of 81 not out, with 2005 runs made in some 230 games with 9 fifties. Phil also took 251 wickets at 18.62 apiece, with his best return being a superb 8 for 26 in 1994 against Sutton-on-Hull CC. Quite a decent all-round record!

Conversely, batsman Neil only took two wickets in his long career, hitting just one ‘ton’ in the 2004 summer against East Park Marist with his 110 not out, including 17 fours and 2 sixes. His 226 games for the Club produced 3145 runs to average 16.35 containing six fifties.

All those connected with the 130 year old Holderness Club will wish the popular pair the very best wishes in their retirement, but hope that they may put a little something back into the game by considering to take up Umpiring as we are always short of officials to don the ‘white coat’ !!

With many thanks to Malc Ripley for his cricket reports during the course of this season!
