Yorkshire Water Public Drop-in – Wednesday 24 August 2011

5:16 pm

YORKSHIRE WATER are inviting the public to a series of ‘drop-in sessions’ at Hedon Town Hall on Wednesday 24th August, 3pm – 8pm. This will be run as five one-hour long sessions.

The Company says on its Hull and Saltend News website:

“We’re holding a public drop-in about our waste water treatment works at Saltend. Come along and talk to us about the works and our planned investment to reduce odours. The event will be split into five hour-long sessions, starting with an overview presentation on the hour, every hour, followed by a chance for you to speak to key staff.”

The idea of Yorkshire Water holding public drop-in sessions in Hedon to explain their plans regarding the Saltend Treatment Works was mooted at the meeting between the company and local politicians held on 5th August and reported on the Blog, see Stop the Stench say local Ward Councillors.

The Hedon Blog says: “We hope that the public take full advantage of these sessions to raise their concerns and worries about the ongoing odour problems”

  1. I’m delighted to see that YW have responded positively to my request for them to come to Hedon Town Hall in order that they can explain to unhappy residents just what has been going wrong at their water-treatment works at Saltend and to allow local people to ‘vent their spleen’ at them. I hope all you’ Hedon bloggers’ take this opportunity, and that you tell all your family and friends to turn up too.
Along with my fellow Ward Councillor Mike Bryan, Graham Stuart, the M.P. and Portfolio Holder Jane Evison, I met up with senior executives of YW on August 5th at County Hall. We made them aware in no uncertain terms that local people were absolutely incensed at having to tolerate such an continuous, obnoxious stench during those precious few weeks in June, July and August when we should be able to enjoy the summer weather and long evenings in the garden. Summer 2011 has been a write-off as far as many of us are concerned and it is not acceptable that the company that has given us the problem should be allowed to get away with it, at least without facing the people affected by their actions.
Also, as arranged at that first meeting, I will be holding discussions with YW’s head of communications in the expectation of securing some form of compensation package for the local community. It would surely not be unreasonable for us to expect them to come up with a positive, tangible gesture to show how sorry they really are! Watch this space.

  2. POTENTIAL SOLUTION ? Discussions with my niece on the subject of “TheSaltend Stink” led to us asking, Would it appear impertinant of us to suggest that every effort is made to persuade Yorkshire Water to relocate their Higher Management and Customer Services sections to a purpose built facility on the site now occupied by the two near derelict houses near the works on Hedon road.
Yorkshire Water should also be encouraged to display their confidence in the 3,5 million piece of hardware solving the problem of the obnoxious stink by moving from Bradford with all the relevant benifits to be had by being at close hand, and get all their ducks in a row if anything unforseen should happen!
They could also consider interaction with other companies now that this area has been declared a Enterprise Zone with all the potential this has to offer for more monumental cock-ups,there is to be Tax Breaks available and lower levels of planning control.
No planning restrictions should be placed on the building of a new office block, so as to speed up the relocation to take place, probably local residents will be only too pleased to fund the first weeks supply of coffee and custard creams, not forgetting winalot biscuits for Pongo the office guarddog!
