DID YOU EVER WONDER what happens to all the litter (including leaves, soil and paper) that is collected by the Council’s street sweeping trucks?
They used to be sent to the waste landfill sites, but a new service has now been launched to send road sweepings from Hedon and Preston for composting instead! The sweepings from this area and also Anlaby, Beverley, Hessle, Kirkella and Willerby will be emptied at the Wilmington depot, Hull, and then transported for mixing with other materials, such as garden waste, which is going for composting.
John Skidmore, head of the Council’s streetscene services, said: “This is an innovative scheme. Trials suggest it will prove successful in keeping yet more waste out of landfill, saving costs to the council and damage to the environment”
