Successful Yorkshire Day 2009 in Hedon

£1,500 raised during Yorkshire Day in Hedon

There was a great deal of activity in St. Augustine’s Church on the morning of Yorkshire Day, Saturday the 1^st of August 2009. A number of stalls had been set up, where books, cakes, jewellery, etc. were on sale. As usual, the Tombola was very popular, but the busiest area was the kitchen, where a variety of refreshments were available. The bacon butties in particular, were very popular. The tower was open to visitors, as far as the ringing room and the bell tower, and had a continuous flow of people.

Throughout the day, the Yorkshire Flag was flying on the tower. This was it’s first outing, having recently been bought for the town by Mayoress Councillor Ann Suggit.

The Kingston Pipe Band entertained listeners when they played a variety of music in the Market Place, the Churchyard and inside the Church.

In the afternoon, the action moved to the Haven Arms, where landlord Mark had made a large marquee available, and provided a BBQ. During the day, tickets for a Balloon Race had been on sale. The balloons were prepared and stored inside a large net until they were released at about 4 p.m. There was a good breeze to carry them off.

Tickets for the Grand Draw had been on sale for several weeks, and when these were drawn, the First Prize, a £75 Marks and Spencer gift card, was won by Mr. H.G.Procter.  The winner of the Treasure Trail was the Feetham family of Clough Garth and all who participated in the Fun Run received a medal.

The day was arranged in aid of Church Funds, and approximately £1500 was raised.
