  1. Janet, Pat and Jim – your comments are all well made and noted.

The town centre parking complaints come up far more often than anything else at Hedon Council Meetings, and equally as frequently they are referred onwards to the Parking People at Beverley for comment. We have to accept that there will never be a perfect solution to the problem.

I have made the point on many occasions over the years, that market towns and motor cars were not made for one another, and I suspect the same sort of discussion is being held in many communities like ours up and down the country.

Janet – the fact is, there has been no change in the parking limits in Hedon Town Centre for many years. It’s always been 1 hour maximum. If you were to do a survey of on-street parking in the central area (not in designated car-parks) the average stay will be probably 10 minutes or less. Most people pop into Hedon to get a lottery ticket, or to buy a 6 pack of lager, or to pick up a bread loaf from the Co-op. Those who come in to do a daily ‘shop’ (weekly ‘shops’ are not done in the centre) seem either to walk or cycle in, or to find a space in the car-parks

Pat – Market Hill parking for patients wanting to go to the doctors is a long-standing bone of contention and it has been said by many people (I couldn’t possibly comment of course) that the parking spaces are taken early by surgery staff and people working in the town centre to the detriment of patients. Maybe an 8am survey would prove or disprove that claim! That may be solvable by imposing a time limit, but it will mean upsetting some of the existing space users, and of course more signage and general clutter which will impact upon the attractive ‘village green’ view, and someone is sure to take offence at that idea too.

You can’t please all of the people all of the time I suppose! If you have any ideas that will resolve Hedon’s problems to everyone’s satisfaction, let me know and I’ll put them forward for consideration at ERYC and Hedon.

  2. Yes I agree with Janet’s comments regarding the one hour shopping limit. There is only limited parking on Market Hill too so if you have to visit the Doctors you have to find somewhere to park as do the people in the surrounding villages that have to go to the Doctors. Johnson’s Corner Car Park has parking but that fills up quickly.

  3. I thought the council wanted us all to support the shops how do we get our shopping all done in an hour if you have to go in 2 or 3 shops and wait in queues. come on council get your brains working 1st the Bollard now the parking what next. Oh I know shops closing down
