MP Watch – follow the activities of your local Member of Parliament

intouch was the title of a Conservative Party newsletter delivered to South West Holderness homes last week. It is an appropriate title to describe the status of our local MP Graham Stuart.

Graham Stuart is an MP in touch with his constituents using traditional means such as newsletters and street surgeries, but he also utilises the internet to carry out two-way communication. Website services have transformed the way in which we can follow the activities of our representatives in Parliament. This allows a level of transparency and accountability to be available that just was not possible to previous generations.

This article looks at some of those website services that are available:

You can e-mail Graham Stuart at graham@grahamstuart.com;

MP’s own website Graham Stuart, MP. This will bring you the news that the MP himself feels is essential to communicate to constituents. And very much like the Hedon Blog, you can leave comments and give your own views;

TheyWorkForYou.Com is an excellent service that allows you to find out everything you might want to know about an MP’s work in Parliament. You can arrange to be sent an e-mail everytime your MP speaks in the House of Commons; you can find out about their Voting Record, the issues that interest them, and crucially in today’s Parliament – their expenses;

Graham Stuart is on Twitter and keeps us informed of some key activities via his account at http://twitter.com/grahamstuart. Graham is an occasional Twitterer his latest Tweet actually gives a link to a speech he made on coastal towns recorded at TheyWorkForYou;

As reported on the Blog you can follow the activities of your local MP via the iPad and iPhone;

You can also use Yoosk! to ask public questions of your local MP – and other national politicians.

Local Hedon Conservative Mike Bryan describes his colleague as a “workaholic” and – whether you support that particular Party or not – if you begin to follow Graham Stuart via the services mentioned above then you just might be inclined to agree!

Other hard working local politicians that utilise the internet and particularly Twitter to make themselves accountable are:

  • John Prescott (former East Hull MP) on his Prezza Blog.

Local Poet

This poem was sent in by Linda Brown who has lived in the area for 34 years. Linda admits she just loves writing and has been creating poetry since she was 13 years old! This particularly moving piece of poetry is true and is dedicated to Linda’s father.

JUST THIS

Hands held up against a cold white wall
A contrast between here and what was to be
Slipping mine into yours, closing the coldness of the doors
For just the time we had, here, just for you and just for me.

I wanted eternity…………….
Nothing was around us, no people could we see
Voices in the distance but not falling to our ears
For we were together now, so close, so one
And I lived with you so so many years

I wanted so many more
But you were slipping away, even though I still felt the warmth in my hand
Yours
I asked ‘ father what would bring you bliss’
Just before you faded from me, to your eternity
Tighening your fingers around mine you replied
‘Just this’

Thanks Linda – you must keep on writing!

If Linda has inspired you to have a go at writing poetry – then fantastic! Send it into the Hedon Blog.

A quick round-up of some local news that you just might have missed!?

The Wardrobe Boutique completes a cycle of shop moves in the town in late summer when it takes over premises in Watmough Arcade that are to be vacated by Occasions of Hedon. Occasions as previously reported is moving to the former Co-op Travel Building in the Market Place.

The Wardrobe Boutique, owned by Jo Adams, is currently located above the Hair Shop (see Facebook Page) on Fletchergate at the top of St Augustine’s Gate. The Hair Shop is owned by Jo’s sister Danielle.

Hedon Group Practice reports that Dr Ikpoh joined the GP surgery at the beginning of the month as a permanent partner, having worked there as a salaried doctor over the past year.

The Surgery has gone all hi-tech with a ‘booking in machine’ installed to the left of the Reception desk.  This has been put in to avoid queuing at Reception.  It requires you to insert your date of birth and name and then directs you to a waiting area. The Practice noticeboard asks that you give the machine a try next time you are at the Surgery.

And don’t forget about the Brown Bin changes coming into force in September!

Saltend Toxic Alarm Test

TOXIC ALARM TEST – TUESDAY 27th JULY 2010

BP SALTEND has given advance notice of its intention to test its toxic alarm system on TUESDAY 27th JULY 2010 as part of a site-wide exercise of their ‘gas release’ procedures.

The alarm which sounds like an old air raid siren is normally tested every Wednesday at 2pm. But the exercise on Tuesday is a major test of what the Saltend workforce would do in the case of a real gas release and will involve the alarm sounding for a longer period.

The letter circulated from the company says:

Unfortunately, I cannot give you a precise time for the test because we do not want our workforce to be too prepared. However, if you feel this could cause you a problem, please give us a contact number and we will call you shortly before the alarm is sounded.”

For further information contact Dr Malcolm Joslin on 01482 892513 or Andy Carter-Fea on 01482 894770. E-mail: malcolm.joslin@uk.bp.com

Haven Arms Times

HAVEN ARMS TIMES, a glossy 6-page newsletter produced by the popular pub and restaurant on Hedon’s Havenside, was circulated recently with the current July Issue of the Holderness Heartbeat extolling the virtues of this “hidden gem” on our doorstep.

Whilst the Haven Arms advertises regularly in the local media, it was a nice touch to see the pub advertise itself directly to local residents.

The newsletter was full of interesting information about the Haven Arms, including the fact that the pub is actually owned by husband and wife team Mark Hawksworth and Alison Smyth which allows them to be more responsive to the needs of their customers – this is surely a plus in an industry that tends to be dominated by big brewers’ and business interests that ‘dictate’ mostly everything that a pub can or cannot do!

The Times tells us that the Haven Arms is the only pub in the area currently in the CAMRA GOOD BEER GUIDE 2010 – but as well as the regular ales on sale, the pub runs beer and cider festivals at Bank Holidays too.

However, the Hedon Blogger is particularly keen (following the now outdated ‘moan‘ last year) to see the pub using the internet to communicate with customers.

The pub has a Facebook Page (search for Ravin’ Haven). You can send a blank e-mail to enquiries@havenarms.co.uk to be added to the mailing list and be kept informed of planned events. And the pub is also developing its website presence which hopefully will be up-and-running at www.havenarms.co.uk.

The Haven Arms in light of its proximity to the Haven – and the ambition to bring the water back there – is perfectly placed to develop even further as perhaps a ‘not-so-hidden’ gem on our doorstep.

Keep up the good work Mark, Alison and staff at the Haven!
