MP’s Street Surgery becomes an open-air forum for Anti-MS3 pole campaigners raising concerns about telegraph poles

GRAHAM STUART MP’s Street Surgery yesterday became an opportunity for residents and campaigners to raise concerns about the rollout of MS3 telegraph poles.

Some 40 people met up with Graham Stuart at his surgery in Hedon Market Place yesterday (21 October 2023). The MP for Beverley and Holderness listened to the forthright but polite views of those worried about the MS3 rollout of telegraph poles across Hedon and Preston.

There were concerns about the lack of information from MS3, the absence of any consultation, the alarm at the conduct of some of MS3’s contractors, and the worry about the proposed location of some of the telegraph poles. Residents involved in the recent street protests additionally expressed their dismay at the recent change in tactics of Humberside Police which appeared to clearly favour the MS3 rollout.

Mr Stuart whilst stating that he didn’t want telegraph poles, explained about the ‘permitted development’ rights that enabled the rollout to take place. He welcomed ideas about taking the issue to Parliament and OFCOM to seek solutions there. A clear trend of opinion amongst those present was for the MS3 permits, issued by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) to authorise the work, to be rescinded whilst dialogue took place. Mr Stuart said he would raise this with ERYC on Monday morning, but would not be surprised if the council had restrictions in place preventing them from doing that.

Graham Stuart has been left under no illusion as to the strength of feeling on this issue from amongst local residents and his constituents.
