Malc Ripley fills us in on last week’s cricket action:

First XI v Kirk Ella: The South Holderness Club again suffered mixed playing fortunes, but pride of place goes to the first Xl, for completing a fine ‘double’ over last summer’s League Champions Kirk Ella, this time at Well Lane, where on a damp pitch following the overnight downpour, the home side were back in the hutch for 74 all out. Only all-rounder Howard Robson with his 21 and Kallam Cubertson (16), could progress as Rich Rosindale with a good 10 over spell realising 4 for 19, assisted by Connaire Brattan with figures of 3 for 17 also in ten overs, together with the pair of very promising youngsters Jack Riley ( 2 for 19 in 6 ), and Luke Ingram (1 for 11 in 5), doing the damage.

The visitors required some 29 overs to put up their winning 75 for 5 with promoted opener Craig McFadyen scoring 25, ‘keeper Jamie Walkley 18no, supported by skipper Rich Ingram with his 16. The home team’s veteran Colin English tried manfully to stem the tide, with a fine 3 for 31 off his 12 overs, but his efforts proved to be in vain, as the Hedon based outfit recorded their second success.

Kirk Ella 74 lost to SHCC 75 for5.

An XI v Gilberdyke: Despite having the worst of the eventual Draw, in the match ‘Sponsored’ by Drapers Ltd, Scrap Metal Merchants of Hull, the Holderness second string still lead their York Eastern Conference Division 2 table by a narrow three point margin, albeit having played a match more than their second placed rivals Dalton Holme.

The Middle Lane affair was reduced to 36 overs apiece, due to a wet pitch, but the Gilberdyke batsmen enjoyed themselves to the tune of 203 for 4, with Ray Callis cracking an attractive unbeaten 79. Mike Rhodes lent fine support with his undefeated 38, despite Andy Kunkel’s figures of 2 for 50 in some 15 overs.

The home side were restricted to 132 for 8 in reply, with only Kunkle, who completed a fine all round match with a hard-hitting 52, together with the up and coming Ryan Oliver supporting with his pleasing 30. Callis proved a real thorn in the home side, by following up with good figures of
3 for 18 off his 8 tight overs, to slow the run rate.

SHCC An Xl 132 for 8 drew with Gilberdyke 203 for 4.

Other news: The SHCC Under 17’s travelled to Chanterlands Avenue, to take on their Hull CC counterparts, but the visitors were restricted to 74 for 7 in their 20 allotted overs. The stronger Hull side, had just an over to spare when they recorded an easy nine wicket success.
