Petition: Smells from Waste Water Treatment Works are a public nuisance!

9:52 pm

HEDON IS A PLACE OF AMBITIONS! We want to celebrate and build upon our history and heritage and create an even better place for people to live, work and visit!

We have an active community of groups and individuals that are striving to improve the quality and enjoyment of life for all its residents. Hedon residents have great ideas about transforming the town; its shopping and leisure experience – whilst preserving its character and opposing inappropriate development. Hedon even harbours a great ambition to bring water back to the Haven!

Hedon has the talent, the ideas and the imagination to take us into a positive future… We have lots to look forward to…

… and then there’s the smell!

Only months after HOTI successfully fought off the plans to build a waste burning incinerator we now face a new fight – against the foul-smelling stink from Yorkshire Water’s lamella tanks at its Waste Water Treatment Works.

The smells – which Yorkshire Water told us in 2000 would not exist – have ruined local residents enjoyment of the summer weeks. And there is reason to believe that the health of some residents have been adversely affected by the most penetrating of odours.

Yorkshire Water has apologised for the odours and claim that things will improve when the new £3.5m odour control unit is built – but they  seem to be unable to tell us that smells will be eliminated.

The Hedon Blog has responded to the concerns of its readers and commentators by launching a petition that urges East Riding and Hull City Councils to treat Yorkshire Water and its smells as a public nuisance and use the legal system to force the company to eliminate its odours or suffer the consequences for its ‘criminal’ acts.

Are you affected by the smells? Of course these smells have no boundaries and also impact upon Preston, Paull, South West Holderness and East Hull. If you are affected, we are encouraging you to sign our petition – the first step in a campaign to force Yorkshire Water to comply with its earlier “No smells at Saltend” claims

  2. Hi everyone, interesting meeting the other night, I thought our councillors presented themselves excellently and are obviously doing all they can to address the situation. However without the support of the people I feel they have little chance of success, its been 11 years since the plant was built and we have all suffered the hideous smells generated for long enough.

Having listened carefully i found one or two points hard to take in, Apparently before the council can take legal action it has to be declared a public nuisance, I asked who takes the decision to state it is a public nuisance , the answer came back Yorkshire water, so what there saying is that they are self governing, how can this be right and who agreed to this arrangement, I find it ludicous.
There was also talk of forming a committee to organise a full campaign including a possible public demonstration, Can i be cheeky and propose Ray as chairman his attention to detail and overall knowledge of whats going on up there is second to none and I would gladly serve on any committee he may organise.

  3. THE PETITION will be presented to the East Riding Council’s Environment and Regeneration Overview and Scrutiny Committee which meets on Wed 21st September 2011. We will be given 5 minutes to address the meeting and Ward Councillors also get the chance to speak on the matter.

In order to get the petition copied and sent in on time – the Council suggests by the 9th Sept – I’ve suggested the petition closes by Wed 7th September.

Between now and then we should be able to get hundreds of signatures!
