The Yorkshire Water Smells – Wall of Shame!

THE DAY OF ACTION on Saturday 3rd September 2011 at 9:00am at Paull Car Boot Sale and 12:00 high-noon at Hedon Market Place will provide a quick opportunity for people to show their opposition to the foul smells that have occasionally – but persistently – dogged local communities over the last 11 years!

As well as meeting our campaign mascot PONGO – those attending and passing-by will have an opportunity to sign a petition or complete a Post-It note to add to the Wall of Shame.

The Wall of Shame aims to record local experiences of the smells and will be kept as a permanent record revealing how people felt about the stench when it affected their lives – and how it affected their lives. A copy of the Wall of Shame – including a list of each and every comment – will be sent to Yorkshire Water.

You can add your comment to the Wall of Shame now – just click the link!

UPDATE: The ONLINE PETITION has now been signed by over 1,000 people – a similar number of people are expected to have signed paper versions of the petition.

Blank Bus Timetables – result of cuts

WE REVIEWED the new FixMyTransport service on HU12 yesterday. We tried the new service out by asking when the new bus timetables were going to be placed within the blank holders at the bus stops locally. The reply revealed some surprising information.

EYMS (East Yorkshire Motor Services) Marketing Manager, Claire Robinson, stated in her reply that “East Riding of Yorkshire Council have recently decided to end their production of roadside publicity in the area, which means that EYMS have had to take on publicity for nearly all bus stops in the county.”

The bus company is tackling the problem through employing a new publicity assistant who will be responsible for timetables at bus stops, they are also updating new computer software which will help with the production of publicity.

EYMS have apologised for the blank cases: “We thought it was better to have no information in them rather than incorrect information, so we took the out-of-date timetables out when the services changed… We hope to have the new Hedon information up soon.”

The East Riding Council seems to have avoided making massive cuts in bus service subsidies but the above example does demonstrate that not all services have escaped. On this occasion EYMS have responded by allocating new staff resources and improving their technological capacity.

Saltend Toxic Alarm Test

TOXIC ALARM TEST – TUESDAY 20th SEPTEMBER 2011

BP CHEMICALS LTD at Saltend has given advance notice of its intention to test its toxic alarm system on TUESDAY 20th SEPTEMBER.

The alarm, which sounds like an old World War II air raid siren, is normally tested every Wednesday at 2pm. But the exercise on 20th September is a major test of what the Saltend workforce would do in the case of a real toxic gas release and will involve the alarm sounding for a longer period.

The letter circulated from the company (pdf) says:

“Unfortunately, I cannot give you a precise time for the test because we do not want our workforce to be too prepared. However, if you feel this could cause you a problem, please give us a contact number and we will call you shortly before the alarm is sounded.”
