Community health and social care watchdog LINk to meet in Bridlington

ERY LINk the East Riding’s Local Involvement Network meets in Bridlington next month (Tuesday 22nd June 2010) to discuss:

  • Mental Health Provision in the East Riding
  • Neighbourhood Care Teams

The public forum will be an opportunity to hear from the people who plan and provide our local services with representatives from the East Riding NHS, the Council and the Humber NHS Foundation Trust in attendance.

Predominantly the event is a chance for concerned members of the public to put forward their views and influence change.

The event takes place twice from 1:30pm – 3:30pm and from 4:30pm – 6:30pm and will be followed at 7:00pm by the ERY LINk’s members Annual General Meeting.

For more information on the venue or to book your place then contact ERY LINk by telephone on 01377 232135 or by e-mail at erylink@hwrcc.org.uk.

Online Calendar of Hedon area events?

THIS IS an Online Calendar of Hedon and area events (click the link above to access). It uses a programme published by Bravenet.Com.

This is included here as a trial so it is not completely up-to-date, however, it is an opportunity to experiment whether people would find it a useful addition to the What’s On page.

Note: The Hedon Blog has no control over the adverts that litter the calendar.

Will Rooster crow no more?

THE ROOSTER is the Roos Parish Newsletter. The publication, produced by volunteers since 2006, aims to provide a record of the community life of the village near Withernsea.

The Rooster is now in its 181st edition but has warned that it may cease publication unless it finds a volunteer to print the newsletter. The Rooster Association Committee has recently invested in a laser printer which has saved money, but after three years in the job the current volunteer who operates the printer is retiring from that particular role.

In its current editorial The Rooster describes the volunteer’s role which takes place once a month:

Usually 550 copies of The Rooster are printed: The process takes about six hours overall, though the operator does not need to be in constant attendance. The operator will not be asked to assemble and staple the pages. All expenses (including the cost of materials) will be met from the Association`s funds. What we are seeking is a person who owns a computer and will offer to use our laser printer to print the pages from a disc (or e-mail) supplied; inform the Committee promptly of any problems (e.g. sickness or holiday dates).”

Ideally volunteers should be familiar with laser printers but this is not essential as training will be given. What is required is technical competence and willingness to offer about six hours of time each month.

The newsletter emphasises that the need to replace this volunteer is urgent and those interested should contact the Rooster: Details can be found in the current edition which can be viewed here at ROOSTER MAY 2010.

Community newsletters are a vital source of communication in any village or small town. They ensure that those without access to the internet can receive information about community groups and events; and in many cases they provide the only platform for local groups to promote their activities.

Let us hope that The Rooster continues to crow about Roos!

Back issues of The Rooster are available at the Roos Parish Council website.

South Holderness Cricket Club

HEDON IS LUCKY to boast its own cricket ground. There is nothing quite like the sound of the thwack! of the cricket ball against the willow bat piercing an otherwise peaceful day, followed by an excited cry of “HOWZAAT!!!” It’s such a so-very English sound! Although I’m sure many Australians, Sri Lankans and Indians would dispute this!

Hedon is home territory to the South Holderness Cricket Club which plays at Middle Lane. The Club is always on the lookout for new players, young and old and those interested can contact the club via the details listed on its website (highlighted above). You can also follow news from the club via its new Facebook Page.

The Club is also currently conducting a campaign to raise funds to demolish and rebuild its old pavilion.

Club Welfare Officer, Wendy Swales says that the Club needs to raise approximately £50,000 to do this.

We wish the Club well with this campaign and look forward to promoting ways that local Hedon folk might be able to help.

Long live the sound of the Thwack!
