Holerness Advertiser to merge with East Hull sister publication

THE HOLDERNESS ADVERTISER is to merge with the East Hull Advertiser from the next edition to be published on Wednesday 30th December 2009.

This step is bound to reduce the volume of really local information being provided about – and from – East Yorkshire by Mail News & Media Ltd.

This means it is even more important for the Holderness Gazette and hyperlocal sites like the Hedon Blog and the Withernwick Village Website to be supported in maintaining a commitment to providing hyperlocal material.

What do you think? Where do you go for really local information?

Needed: Members of Youth Parliament for the East Riding

THE UK YOUTH PARLIAMENT (UKYP) is currently recruiting new candidates to become Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) for the East Riding.

The UKYP aims to give the young people of the UK a voice, which will be heard and listened to by local and national government, providers of services for young people and other agencies that have an interest in the views and needs of young people.

Members of  the youth parliament are aged between11-18. Members meet around six times a year. Once elected MYPs organise events and projects, run campaigns and influence decision makers on the issues which matter most to young people. All MYPs meet once a year at the UK Youth Parliament Annual Sitting.

Young people who wish to stand for the UKYP need to submit their name by 31 January 2010.

Alison Hall Hedon to open as a restaurant

FOR THOSE OF YOU that haven’t noticed, then large posters have appeared on Alison Hall announcing its opening as a restaurant and bar in March 2010.

Alison Hall was opened on 10th December 1931 and was named in honour of Mrs Alison Todd the then President of the local WI (Women’s Institute). The historic Alison Hall grille bearing the WI motto now hangs outside Hedon Museum.

Anyone got any further information on the new development?

See Restaurant Review.

Hedon and the Airships

Image-jpg

R100 Toronto Canada August 1930

HEDON HAD LINKS to the great airships of the early 20th Century. Or at least that’s what an early Christmas present A Century of Hull by David Gerrard tried to convince me!

According to the book the airship R100 was built at Hedon airfield and launched from there on its maiden flight 80 years ago today.

The story of the R100 being built at Hedon is – alas – a myth probably resulting from a slip of the tongue caused by the similar pronunciation of Hedon to the actual site of construction in Howden.
