A quick look at Preston South

Preston South – a quick look and some photos!

In this week’s Friday Photo article, we briefly examine Preston South. Coming along Hull Road, you go through Preston South before hitting Hedon at the Westlands Drain. It comprises the streets from The Woodlands in the West, Astley Close in the North, Farrand Road in the East, and Colemans Road in the South. It is closer to Hedon than the village of Preston. The settlement is actually adjoined to Hedon at the town’s west boundary. It sends three parish councillors to represent the area (the South Ward) on Preston Parish Council.

For elections and council tax precept purposes, residents of the area are in Preston Parish. But it’s probably true that most don’t acknowledge Preston South, hence it’s ‘Hedon’ Sainsbury, The Kingstown Hotel, ‘Hedon’ and it is ‘Hedon’ Service Station rather than Preston South. Residents of Preston South tend to describe themselves as coming from Hedon.

There is a proposal in the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Governance Review (click the link to download) to consult Preston South residents on becoming formally part of Hedon. It is argued that the area would be better served by being part of Hedon. The number of Hedon town councillors would increase from 12 to 14 to reflect the larger Hedon area. The number of councillors in the Preston Parish Council would reduce by four from 13 to 9.

The Preston Parish Council has a notice board at the Sainsbury’s bus stop which is regularly updated with minutes from Parish Council meetings – and occasionally with other community leaflets. On the community front, there used to be a Village Hall on Princes Avenue. It burnt down in 2018, yet the signs directing people to the hall are still in place.

A significant development affecting the immediate area is the Yorkshire Energy Park to be built on the old aerodrome fields.

  1. Are Preston South residents aware they will pay more in council tax when they come under Hedon Parish Council

  2. I do have an original one page document on how the village hall came about in 1958. I would like to pass this on somewhere for keeping – any ideas? – Patricia Fowler
