“HEDON was once listed as the 11th largest port in England – but in 2012 we don’t even have a pond!” With these words, at a meeting last night, Councillor Mike Bryan summed up the frustration of Hedon Town Councillors over getting Horsewell Pond restored.
In order to keep water in the pond and to prevent it constantly draining away, extensive work has to take place to pipe water through from Market Hill. But plans are now being formulated that will see essential professional work take place but also enlist the help of volunteers to help restore the Pond.
Using funding already set aside, monies available through the East Riding Council, and lots of goodwill, Hedon Town Council gave a commitment that Horsewell Pond will be restored.
Members of BP Rugby Club have volunteered to come and dig out embedded nettles at the site. There is potentially an offer of new wildflower bulbs being made available courtesy of Vivergo Fuels. And through the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust there is also the potential to obtain funding for a visitor information board describing essential things about the pond; its history, flora and fauna perhaps. There is also the possibility of educational projects linked to the local primary schools.
This news has come from attending the meeting last night in a public capacity. We wait to hear the official report on this matter from the Hedon Town Council, but it was certainly a very optimistic, upbeat agenda item.
As a former resident, I hope any attempted restoration will take into account the colony of Great Crested Newts which live there. They are a protected species and their habitat can’t be interfered with or the newts even handled without a license.
Martin, the pond is down Ivy Lane opposite Hedon Primary School Ketwell Lane, it is an ancient pond and had a ducking stool, as children we were all told it was to duck witches but lately it was mentioned that it was for irritable women
I live in Hedon and have done for almost thirty years, however i feel embarrassed to ask the question! Where about’s is horsewell pond situated?? Im intrigued with the idea of Hedon having its own pond and hope that the restoration takes place. Just need to know where it is.
