Wednesday Writings – The Town Council (a poem)

The Town Council – By David Thompson

Twice monthly do the meetings fall,
Held in the towns` historic hall,
Where mayors of yesterday, look down
Upon the dealings of the town.

The twelve good men and women who
Give free their time, good deeds to do,
With minutes taken by the clerk
And all decisions for to mark.

All interests must be declared
And any prejudices heard,
For all the public has to see
That squeaky clean, they have to be.

They start the night with best intent,
“By ten the meetings will be spent”,
But if at length they ramble on,
It could be later when they`re done.

For all assembled have their say,
And some will say it come what may,
And some say yes, and some say no
When arguments flow to and fro.

Of kitchen costs, burial fees,
Extension plans, and pruning trees,
Deliberations quite mundane,
The rights of way on Twyers Lane.

They set the precept for the year,
For keeping dykes and ditches clear,
The peoples` taxes to disburse,
These keepers of the public purse.

The civic cogs go creaking on
and after all is said and done,
Its down the “Legion”, or the “Station”
For a little lubrication.

What better person to eulogise about the Town Council – than a town councillor! As well as an outstanding poet, Councillor David Thompson is also one of the “twelve good men and women” mentioned above!

Wednesday Writings – Mood Changes

Mood Changes – By Jo Gardner

Head in turmoil
Every-thing is black
Need a release
Found a blade
Blood oozes
Sense of relief

———————————————

Out of the blue
The laughter of child
Mellows the mood
From black to gold
Despair and hope so closely linked
Nothing beats the laughter of child

Wednesday Writings – Sounds

Sounds – by David Thompson

Beeching`s decimation of the rail,
Has left a leafy woodland trail,
Once a branch line to the sticks,
Took folks to With for two and six,
That passes close beside our home,
A rustic byway free to roam,
From dog walking and country hikers,
To naughty noisy motor bikers.
Hawthorn trees each side abound,
Where finches chirp their merry sound,
And the Crow with raucous caw,
That wakes me up at half past four.
And sometimes, when the air is still,
The Song Thrush gives melodious trill,
With Blackbirds, coats of velvet black,
Calling out with “chink” and “chack”.
And added from the lake beyond,
All the noises of the pond,
A quacking, honking and an aaaaaark,
The cacophony goes on till dark.
And then at night when half awake,
When all is quiet round the lake,
Other than a plaintive “hoo”
From Tawny Owl, how do you do,
A sound far off upon the air,
Or perhaps it isn`t there,
The rhythm of a ghostly train,
Or maybe too much wine again.

Announcement: HU12 Online ‘trading’

REPRODUCED FROM HU12 ONLINE:

HU12 ONLINE starts ‘trading’ from Wednesday 7th March 2012.

The www.hu12.net website (HU12 Online) will play the role of a ‘hyperlocal’ news agency which will gather and collect local news,  information and events, from – and relevant to – the South Holderness towns and villages.

As well as being published on HU12 Online, the material will be shared with other news providers and also on social-media networks. In this way HU12 will seek to publicise and positively promote the area – whilst not neglecting to report the more contentious issues on occasion. But the focus will be on publicising those smaller community stories and issues that do not normally find their way into mainstream media.

In short the website aims to expand its coverage of local news, information and events financed through the income generated from providing a series of locally useful initiatives:

  • offering low-cost advertising and promotion services for local businesses and organisations;
  • advertising local vacancies on our Jobs page;
  • starting our Shop so that local people can sell or swap items;
  • hosting an Amazon shop;
  • offering simple website creation and management services.

You can find out more about some of these on HU12 Online Commerce.

The results of our trading activities should see HU12 Online (and the Hedon Blog) covering more issues, and in greater depth than ever before.

We ask for our readers continuing support – and please make sure you tell your neighbours and friends about HU12 Online!

Programme of Exhibitions at the Hedon Museum

HEDON MUSEUM kicks off its New Year programme on Saturday 18th February 2012 after being ‘dark’ since November 2011.

The first exhibition Off to the Ball! will run until Sat 17th March 2012 and will include a collection of fans and historic dresses.

Following an appeal made in 2010 to people who owned pictures, the museum will be showing drawings of Holderness by the well-known artist Frederick Schultz Smith early in the year. FS Smith in Holderness will also include modern photographs of the same locations taken by the members of the ‘Picture this!’ Photographic Club.

A later exhibition will feature Flying in East Yorkshire 1912-1939. And later still, local memorabilia and photographs will be displayed as part of the Oh I do like to be beside the Seaside! exhibition.

The Museum will open from Saturday 18th February 2012 and will be open 10am – 4pm every Saturday and Wednesday from then on.

National Citizen Service local summer opportunities

YOUNG PEOPLE in Hedon and across South Holderness are being offered the opportunity to volunteer in their community and earn valuable UCAS points during the summer holidays.

The National Citizen Service (NSC), which ran last summer with young people in Bridlington and Beverley, is now being extended this year to include Year 11 students in Haltemprice and South Holderness as well.

The NCS is run by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s youth support service and funded by young people’s charity, Catch 22. It offers a fun but challenging personal development programme. Participants also have the chance to take the ASDAN community volunteering qualification to gain 30 UCAS points.

Last year, groups took part in many fund-raising and community activities, including raising money for the RNLI and a community garden project. Their work was recognised with the groups picking up a national award at a prestigious ceremony in London attended by Princess Anne.

Katherine Stoney, volunteering officer at East Riding of Yorkshire Council youth support service, said:

“We are really pleased to be able to extend the opportunity to the Haltemprice and Holderness areas this year. Last year we were one of the few providers to offer the chance for participants to gain 30 valuable UCAS points, providing the young people complete the ASDAN community volunteering qualification and we will be offering the same this year. This really is a great opportunity for young people to make a difference to their community during their summer holidays.”

Anyone in this area who is interested in taking part in the scheme should contact:
