Hornsea – Community set up own Tourist Information Office in response to closure

Community Says – VISIT HORNSEA

Following the decision by VHEY (Visit Hull and East Yorkshire) to close the Tourist Information Centre in the seaside resort of Hornsea, then locals have decided to set up their own visitor information service.

Following local upset about the decision to close the tourist information centre in favour of ‘touch-screen’ facilities in the local leisure centre, then local community activists have put their knowledge of the Hornsea area to good use by agreeing to staff a small stall giving out information to visitors for the three weeks left of the school holidays.

“Hornsea is a fascinating little town, situated as it is between the mere and the sea, and we have collected information about its history, plus lots of maps, as well as leaflets from visitor attractions etc, so there will be something new for most people and we welcome everyone calling in, local people as well as visitors.” Organiser Polly Wosdale reported on About My Area.

The centre opened yesterday (17th August 2009) in the Methodist Church, almost directly opposite the closed Tourist Information Centre in Newbegin.

It will be open from 10am to 4pm on weekdays, and possibly Saturday mornings, offering information to anyone about local attractions.

What a fantastic example of local community action filling the gaps in mainstream services. VHEY have claimed that the new ‘touch-screen’ service is a pilot scheme and will be reviewed at the end of the holiday season. This review must surely take into account and nurture and invest in – yes spend money – to support this kind of community initiative.

Hedon Blog JigZone – In honour of Prezza!

East Hull MP John Prescott follows in getting the Obama treatment from me by being turned into one of the Hedon Blog’s popular jigsaws. As the previous post demonstrates, John has deserved this honour because of his robust defence of the UK National Health Service as part of the #welovetheNHS campaign.

Defending the NHS – online campaign

10_Downing_St_Tweets

The National Health Service is an important feature of British life. Established in 1947 it aims to guarantee universal health care based on peoples’ needs and not on the ability to pay.

The NHS is something that makes us remarkably proud to live where we do. We tend to criticise the NHS and kick the hell out of it on occasion, but if other nations do likewise then we rally around in its defence.

Following remarks branding the NHS as something “evil and Orwellian” by US Republicans then an amazing online campaign spung up in its defence on Twitter. The #welovetheNHS campaign was so successful that the social-networking service was overloaded and apparently crashed.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife joined in the campaign as did John Prescott who sent a “tweet” directly to Barack Obama linking to a YouTube message. But actually it was the thousands of other messages on Twitter that made the campaign effective – it was a show of virtual solidarity for something that people feel is valuable!

The NHS is not perfect and locally organisations like the East Riding of Yorkshire LINk and the Hull LINk have been set up to involve people in bringing about about improvements to local services – however the ethos of providing for peoples’ needs irrelevent of their ability to pay seems to be non-negotiable.

New chalk Maze at Skidby Mill

Chatres Cathedral Maze

Chartres Cathedral Maze

A new chalk maze has been created in the grounds of Skidby Mill by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. The maze pattern is based on the pavement maze at the Chartres Cathedral in France which used to be traversed by medieval monks.

As well as the new maze, the Trust have added a second, larger tunnel of living willow, which provides an exciting place for children to play, and is also a habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife.

The image above shows the pavement maze at Chartres Cathedral. If any visitors to Skidby have a photo they wish to share of the new chalk maze at Skidby Mill – then please send it through or post in the comments section.

Humberside Police – Hedon News

Local Police Forum

Neighbourhood Bobby PC 1787 Bob Pyle

For those interested in policing issues in the local area, then there is an opportunity to attend a Public Police Forum and meet local police officers and officials on Wednesday 9th September 2009 at 7.00pm in the Boardroom at Thorngumbald Village Hall.

For more information have a look at the Humberside Police Authority website under Mid and South West Holderness Wards.

Unfortunately at the time of writing then there was no opportunity to download a publicity poster for the meeting or a Service Level Agreement about policing in Hedon from the web-page. It is assumed that this information will be made available nearer the meeting?

Local Policing News

The average number of crimes in the South West Holderness area (includes Hedon) between May and July 2009 has decreased by 40% (from 100 to 60) compared to the same 3 month period in 2008.

This statistical information is readily available from the Humberside Police Local Crime Mapping web-pages. Information is available from the website on the types of crimes commited i.e. burglary, robbery, vehicle crime, violence and anti-social behaviour.

The Humberside Police also try to give out regular news, advice and warnings to relevant to the local area via their News for the Local Area web-pages. I think that these pages could be updated more frequently, however they do provide some timely relevant advice. The quote below is taken directly from the website and warns local residents about the dangers of summer burglaries.

“There has been a spate of shed burglaries in Hedon and Preston where the offenders have stolen gardening equipment. The team would like to take this opportunity to advise residents to secure sheds and outbuildings with strong locks and clasps. Fitting mesh to windows and also consider an alarm, security marking property with your post code and securing large items within the shed.”

Successful Yorkshire Day 2009 in Hedon

£1,500 raised during Yorkshire Day in Hedon

2.HedonblogThere was a great deal of activity in St. Augustine’s Church on the morning of Yorkshire Day, Saturday the 1st of August 2009. A number of stalls had been set up, where books, cakes, jewellery, etc. were on sale. As usual, the Tombola was very popular, but the busiest area was the kitchen, where a variety of refreshments were available. The baconRefreshments butties in particular, were very popular. The tower was open to visitors, as far as the ringing room and the bell tower, and had a continuous flow of people.

Throughout the day, the Yorkshire Flag was flying on the tower. This was it’s first outing, having recently been bought for the town by Mayoress Councillor Ann Suggit.

The Kingston Pipe Band entertained listeners when they played a variety of music in the Market Place, the Churchyard and inside the Church.

In the afternoon, the action moved to the Haven Arms, where landlord Mark had made a large marquee available, and provided a BBQ. During the day, tickets for a Balloon Race had been on sale. The balloons were prepared and stored inside a large net until they were released at about 4 p.m. There was a good breeze to carry them off.

Tickets for the Grand Draw had been on sale for several weeks, and when these were drawn, the First Prize, a £75 Marks and Spencer gift card, was won by Mr. H.G.Procter.  The winner of the Treasure Trail was the Feetham family of Clough Garth and all who participated in the Fun Run received a medal.

The day was arranged in aid of Church Funds, and approximately £1500 was raised.

Many thanks to all who organised and supported the events and we look forward to seeing you again next year, when Hedon hosts the regional Yorkshire Day celebrations.

And many thanks to Tom Bond for this report on Yorkshire Day in Hedon.
