Report the Smellies! Eradicate Bad Smells from Waste Water Treatment Works at Saltend!

Bad smells!Unpleasant smells can be a re-ocurring problem of living in Hedon due to the fact that we live close to a massive industrial complex at Saltend. However, recent improvement works to the Yorkshire Water’s Waste Water Treatment facility should result in a reduction in bad pongs from that establishment.  But  residents help is requested in reporting any continuing problem.

The East Riding Council is carrying out a 3-week intensive “odour monitoring exercise” into smells coming from the Waste Water facility at Saltend. If residents detect an odour then they should note their location and the date and exact time. They should then report this at their earliest convenience.

Odours from the site should be reported to the Environmental Control team on telephone number 01482 396301. Smells that are detected out of normal office hours (between 5:30pm and 8am) can be reported by message on voicemail using telephone number 01482 396176.

Visits to the area in which an odour is reported may also be made and the council have pledged to carry out additional spot check assessments.

The exercise is due to run until the end of Sunday 28th June 2009.

The East Riding Council’s proposals to introduce car parking charges in some areas of East Yorkshire have sparked controversy and protest. The Hull Daily Mail has launched its own PARK THE CHARGES petition and campaign in opposition.

The final public drop-in roadshow carried out by the council takes place tomorrow in Cottingham at the Civic Hall, 4:30pm – 7.0pm, with the formal consultation process ending at “the end of June.

Rambling Walks around the East Riding

Walking the Riding

The East Riding News (now conveniently available online) always contains useful information from our local council. The current issue comments on the revamp of the council’s website for walkers – Walking the Riding.

The redesigned website at www.walkingtheriding.co.uk contains over 250 walks that can be completed on foot as well as identifying routes for bikes and horses.

The database of walks can be searched for walks in particular areas. A search on “Hedon” brought up four walks in the Southern Holderness Area that pass through the town, including a 3.5mile “short stroll” from Patrington to a cracking 12 mile hike from Hull to Winestead.

Each walk contains information about accessibility – so people in motorised scooters, with prams, etc can plan routes that are suitable for them.

Another potentially essential feature of the website is a walkers’ forum that if utilised (you have to register) will allow people to leave useful comments about the walks and pass on useful information - an essential service that might also help contribute towards the maintenance of particular routes by bringing issues to the attention of those responsible.

The website contains additional guides on walking and on the East Riding; a Frequently Asked Questions section will undoubtedly be improved as the website gets more users and feedback.

In short – a very useful website! Congratulations to the East Riding Council and all those involved in publishing it.

European Election Results 2009: Yorkshire and the Humber

The European Elections 2009 took place under the shadow of the Westminster MPs’ Expenses scandal.

The Yorkshire and the Humber Region saw the election of the first member of the BNP (British National Party) to the European Parliament. This unfortunate – even scary! – development serves to remind us that the traditional parties are failing to inspire and motivate people to participate in the political process.

The full results of the regional poll is as follows:

Humberside Police crime figures for South West Holderness for May 2009

The Humberside Police have released their latest crime figures for the South West Holderness Ward (which incorporates Hedon).

The statistics show that reported crime has decreased slightly from this time last year. In particular the average number of burglaries in the ward area has decreased from 11.3 to 8.7 (23.5%).

However, in Hedon itself the neighbourhood policing team are warning of an INCREASE in burglaries and are asking residents to ensure windows and doors remain locked at all times. They cite the example recently when a local home was entered via an open patio door and electrical equipment stolen while the owners were in the property.

The Hedon police neighbourhood team are offering a free home security survey for any resident who would like one. Please contact any member of the team who will arrange for your property to be examined.
