Hedon Mayormaking.

THE ANNUAL MEETING of Hedon Town Council will ceremonially elect Councillor Sarah Rommell as its Chair on Thursday 20 May 2021 at 7.30pm. The act also installs Councillor Rommell as Hedon’s 674th Mayor. The Hedon Mayor is not a political role, rather it’s a civic honour.

The meeting at Saint Augustine’s Church on Thursday is largely ceremonial and traditional. A tribute will be paid to the retiring Mayor from the previous Mayor. Chains of Office will be invested in the new Mayor and her appointed consort (in this case Councillor Jason Brindley). The new Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress will be invested with their Chains (Councillor David Thompson and Carole Thompson). The Mayor’s Chaplain for the year will be announced.

The council will also formally appoint its standing committees on Thursday: Planning, Property, Finance & General Purposes, Emergency Planning and Personnel.

Under normal circumstances, the first public act of the new Mayor of Hedon would be the Penny Throwing event, but sadly COVID-19 restrictions currently prevent the gathering of crowds.

Councillor Sarah Rommell will be the next Civic Head of Hedon playing an Ambassador role for the town. But she’s already very much a local community champion! Pictured here in the Hedfest Carnival 2016.
