Needed – An official Hedon Pong Tester!?

THE HEDON MAYOR traditionally has the powers to appoint an Official Ale Tester - but perhaps for these modern times with an anti-social smelly neighbour on our doorstep the town needs an Official Pong Tester!?

Hedon really does have an official figure with powers to check that Brewers within this town “do make good wholesome Ale and Beer for Man’s Body.”

The role has been used occasionally for ceremonial, promotional and fun purposes (as pictured in this “testing of the ale” in 2004) after the Mayor’s ancient right to appoint such an individual was revived in 1997.

Perhaps with the persistent smells from Yorkshire Water’s Waste Treatment Works at Saltend the town now needs to appoint a Pong Tester!?

There would be a precedent for this. In 2009 the East Riding Council decided to appoint an odour consultant who would presumably come and give the official sniff and declare whether there was a problem – or not – with smells from the Yorkshire Water site.

Imagine it now – before each and every civic and official function in the town the Official Pong Tester would breathe in deeply, before declaring to all who could hear “The Air is Good!” – or indubitably – “The Air is NOT Good!”

Hmm… Perhaps not one of the most important of things to ask Yorkshire Water when meeting them at the Drop-ins on Wed 24th August at the Hedon Town Hall? But a thought if we will be expected to continue living with odours.

Hedon Haven Beer Festival – Official Ale Testing!

HEDON’S “OFFICIAL BEER TESTER” will be in attendence at the Haven Arms on Friday 30th April 2010 at the launch of the Bank Holiday Weekend Beer Festival at 5:00pm.

Yes! I know a few of us might think that we are the town’s most effective beer testers and tasters! But Hedon really does have an official figure with powers to check that Brewers within this town “do make good wholesome Ale and Beer for Man’s Body.”

Under rights secured by the Crown in the 14th Century then Hedon can appoint a Mayor who in turn can appoint an Ale Tester. The Ale Testing ceremony was revived in 1997. Individual Mayor’s can opt to appoint an ale tester.

The “ale testing” ceremony would normally consist of the Mayor and official entourage – all dressed in medieval garbs – visiting each public house in Hedon and testing the ales in that establishment. The official ale tester will fill their drinking horn with the brew and test it with a gravity float – and possibly have a quick swig! – before declaring “The Ale is Good!” And then much merriment and feasting can follow.

The photo features the “ale testing” from 2004 with the Mayor for that year Councillor Irene Robinson.

The Haven Arms Beer Festival takes place from Friday 30th April to Monday 3rd May 2010 with 25 different handpulled beers and ciders. Live music is promised at the Havenside venue with a Bouncy Castle and other entertainment for children.

Haven Arms, Hedon Beer Festival

The Haven Arms public house is to host a beer festival on Friday 1st – Saturday 2nd May 2009 with 25 hand-pulled beers and ciders available.

The event, which may become an annual festival, kicks off formally this coming Friday at 4pm. The town’s ‘ceremonial and official ale tester’ will be on hand to reassure us that the beer is good!

Testing the Hedon Ale – Ye Olde JigZone

This weekend’s JigZone puzzle depicts Hedon’s curious ceremony and annual re-enactment of ‘the testing of the local ale’.

Dressed in medieval garbs the Mayor and official entourage will visit each public house in Hedon and test the ales in that establishment. The official ale tester (I want that job!) will fill their traditional horn with the brew and test it with a gravity float, and possibly have a quick swig, before declaring “The Ale is Good!!” And then much merriment and feasting can follow with ye olde Morris Dancers performing a dance (inside each venue)! And then its off to the next pub….

Fantastic ceremony which the public can follow! This picture comes from the 2004 event and features that year’s Mayor Councillor Irene Robinson. The official ale tester is on the right with the eager Morris Dancers (all ale testers in training!) looking on.

Our Hedon Adventure!

hedon-picture001Our relocation to Hedon took place on Saturday 24th January 2009 following redundancy on the west coast (Blackpool).

So here we are in the idyllic town of Hedon in East Yorkshire. Having been born in Hull and lived in the area all our lives prior to 2000, we are not actually ‘new’ to the area – but perhaps we are looking at Hedon with new, fresh eyes.

The picture is a greetings card on sale in the featured local post office and is published by Rushay Arts from an original painting by Stuart McKenzie Stoppard.

Also featured is Nutmegs, a charming teashop that sells fantastic yummy looking cakes!

A small market takes place every Wednesday just opposite the buildings shown here. Apparently a market has been taking place in the town for around 800 years!

I visited Hedon Museum yesterday for the first time and was greeted by a very enthusiastic gentleman who was very keen that we enjoyed our visit. As indeed we did! Whilst very small it is well worth a visit – I was delighted to find they were using a photograph of mine taken in 2004 of my tour of Hedon with the Mayor and her official entourage in the annual “testing of the ale” ceremony (more about this in the future).

The Museum is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays 10am – 4pm.
