Hedon Dog Show affectionately known as “Scrufts” took place on Saturday 13 April 2019 attracting 33 entries.

“It was great to see such a variety of dogs entering,” said Hayley Bateman from Haven Vets, who along with the Hedon Mayor Steve Gallant was Judge at the event. And there certainly were dogs of all types taking place in the eight different classes; large and small, smooth and hairy, and all colours and sizes. “A great addition to the show this year, was the agility class, this provided so much fun to both dogs and spectators” continued Hayley referring to the ‘Round the Bend’ obstacle course. The dogs had to navigate around a set of cones and then run or crawl through a tunnel. Kathryn Acre’s dog Swift (both from Hedon) proved to be a master at both completing the two lengths of the course without an hitch, but that was not the case with the other contestants who had to be coaxed through the course with offers of treats and gentle persuasion. One small dog was so excited at being let off the lead to go through the tunnel it made a desperate dash to go and play outside. Compere for the event, John Dawson, had to act as ‘goalkeeper’ at the door to prevent the great escape.

John Dawson, who also plays the role of Town Crier in Hedon, brought lots of hilarity to the show with his banter with the spectators and attempts at audience participation. The activities between the classes prompted by John, including a Mexican wave from the audience, and dancing competitions for young and adult humans and kept everybody entertained.

The dogs were the main stars and had their own class to music, or rather a musical chairs event the ‘Musical Sit’ – when the music stopped, the dog had to immediately sit down as requested by the owner, until only one champion sitter, a dog called Kenzo, was left.

The winners from the eight classes had the opportunity to be judged best in show and that was won by the “Most Handsome Dog” Harley a silver weimaraner breed owned by Helen Hedges from Keyingham.

John Dawson thanked everyone involved in making the town’s third dog show ‘Scrufts’ such a success; the dogs, the owners, the judges, the Haven Arms for hosting the event, and all those at Hedon Town Council for arranging it including Di Storr and council secretary Sandy Dale.
