PARENTS AND CHILDREN: Thursday 21 July 2022 at 6:45 pm is the annual Hedon Penny Throwing ceremony outside the Hedon Town Hall on Saint Augustine’s Gate!
The 675th Mayor of Hedon Councillor David Thompson invites children of the town to scramble and collect the civic pennies. Unusually, and one for the history books, this is the second time this year that the Penny Throwing has been held with the one postponed from last year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, having only been held in April.
The Hedon Penny Throwing event is one of the most peculiar events in Hedon’s civic calendar. Steeped in history, it is a parody of the days when Hedon was a “rotten borough” with people being offered money to vote for a particular Mayoral candidate in elections.
Following their appointment, the incumbent Mayor would pay off his supporters. Today the event is purely a family fun occasion and, usually, the first public act of each new Mayor. Children are ‘thrown’ pennies by the new Mayor, the town’s civic leaders and their guests.
